Talk on Careers in Finance



“Harmoney”, the Finance Club of MBA organized a guest talk on “Careers in Finance” on 12th February 2021 at 2:30 PM through Cisco Webex Platform. The resource person was Dr Dhiraj Jain, Associate Professor, SCMS Pune. Mr Shabarish Ganeshan gave the welcome address, and he introduced the resource person to all the participants. Dr Jain holds a degree in Law from M L Sukhadia University Udaipur, an MBA in Operations Management from IGNOU and a PhD from JRN Vidyapeeth University, Udaipur. He holds a fellowship from Insurance Institute of India and has been a Financial Literacy resource person for SEBI since 2010. Dr Jain started his session with an introduction about various profiles and career choices that a finance graduate may come across after doing their MBA.  He stated that more than the age, it is the performance which matters in the corporate world.

People can move up their career ladder swiftly solely based on their performance.  He noted that the important attributes which prospective employers look for in fresh recruits are quick and logical thinking skills, proactiveness and commitment to work hard.  He further explained the general compensation structures followed by corporates. He iterated the importance of managing time, money and risk effectively and efficiently. He further elucidated the top universal skills a fresh graduate needs to develop before entering the corporate world which include “organizational skills, computer skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, time management skills, professionalism, re-engineering skills, mathematical skills, analytical skills, and many more”. The different career options for fresh MBA Finance graduates include profiles like “rating analyst, financial service brokers, insurance underwriters, auditors, regulators, loan officers, consultants, actuarial, etc.”. He further listed out different career areas in finance like “commercial banking, corporate financing, financial planning, hedge funds, insurance, investment banking, money management, private equity, real estates, etc.” He explained in detail different skill sets required for different job roles. He also mentioned different additional certifications a fresh MBA graduate could take up in order to give a boost to their resume. Towards the end, there was a Q&A session wherein Dr Jain addressed all the students’ queries and doubts patiently and clearly. He urged all the participants to unleash their full potential and explore all possible opportunities in the area of finance. He wished the students to have a successful career and life ahead. The session ended at 4.00 PM with a Vote of Thanks by Ms Sneha Daniel.
