Technical and Creative Writing


On September 9th, 2023, a workshop titled "Technical and Creative Writing" was organized by the Department of Languages in collaboration with the Department of Commerce for students. The workshop was led by Mr. Rajib Borkataki, Head of Content Services at Cybage Software, Pune, who boasts over 20 years of experience in various IT industry roles at organizations like Avaya India, Siemens PLM Software, Persistent Systems, Syntel, and C-DAC.

Mr. Rajib initiated the workshop by underscoring the significance of both creative and technical writing, not only within the realm of literature but across diverse business sectors for effective communication with potential partners and customers. He emphasized that creative writing plays a pivotal role in brand promotion in the business domain, and identified the major elements of creative writing as Plot, Character Development, Underlying Theme, Style, and Emotional Appeal. He also highlighted the essential skills required, including Communication and exceptional writing abilities, thinking creatively, research aptitude, proficiency in grammar and language, and domain-specific knowledge.



Following this introduction to the importance of creative and technical writing, students were assigned an engaging exercise where they were presented with three topics to choose from: 
  •  Compose a story utilising five given words: Detective, piano, elephant, train, and pizza.
  •  Craft a narrative about watching their favourite web series.
  •  Write an email.

This exercise allowed students to express their interests and engage actively in the workshop. Subsequently, the guest speaker delved into the significance of technical writing, defining it as a form of communication employed by professionals to convey information regarding specialised topics. He provided prompts to help students understand the importance of possessing technical writing skills. After the enriching session, Kareena, MA in English with DH student, delivered the vote of thanks and concluded the session.



 Conclusion                                                                                                                                 

In conclusion, the workshop conducted by the Department of Languages and the Department of Commerce effectively fulfilled its objectives by imparting knowledge about the elements of creative writing and offering practical writing exercises. The skills acquired during this workshop are anticipated to significantly enhance the participants' capacity to communicate proficiently through written narratives.

Enhanced Creative Writing Skills: Participants were able to gain a deeper understanding of essential elements such as plot development, character creation, style, and emotional resonance.

● Improved Communication Skills: Through practical exercises and interactive discussions, attendees significantly improved their capacity to effectively convey ideas and stories in writing.
● Hands-On Application: Practical writing exercises offered participants tangible opportunities to immediately apply workshop concepts, reinforcing their understanding and skill development.
● Awareness of Technical Writing: Participants left the workshop with a newfound awareness of the critical role technical writing plays across diverse industries, appreciating its relevance.
● Networking Opportunities: Collaborative activities and group discussions facilitated valuable networking among participants who shared a common passion for writing.
● Preparedness for Future Projects: Armed with newly acquired skills and knowledge, workshop attendees are now well-prepared to tackle future writing projects, whether academic, professional, or creative.
