Parenting Talk - Nurture & Nourish, We Are Together
The CCHS (Center for Counseling & Health Service) organized an hour-long talk on the 9th of January, 2021 at 5.00 pm. Dr Alpana Akolkar & Ms Arpita Ghosh spoke on the importance of nurturing and nourishing together, to mould the next generation.
The Director, Dr Fr Jossy P George, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, said he was happy to initiate such value-added programs for parents and students and encouraged the CCHS department to organize many such programs.
The talk began with the disclaimer that there is no thumb rule to parenting. However, there are some basics that we need to keep in mind when interacting with any individual. Those basics were fulfilling the need to be heard, to be seen and to be appreciated.
The talk focused on the 3 Cs, Communication, Comparison & Criticism, both speakers elaborated with relevant examples and conveyed a few tips.
Emphasizing on the generation we are dealing with, understanding them and talking to them in their language, befriending them and not comparing them with their peers. Criticism or rather a critical feedback is an art, consider when and where and in whose presence the feedback is given.
As was stated initially, most often we do know but forget and thus need reminders. Parents were told to put in the chatbox one thing they appreciated about their son/ daughter, and it was a pleasure to see the chatbox filling up with some great appreciative statements.
Moderated by Dr Namita Mukherjee, the talk concluded at 6.00 pm. Fifty plus parents attended it. One of the parents said – " It was extremely informative to listen to the entire talk with Dr Akolkar & Ms Ghosh. At times as parents, we forget to do so in our usual run in life. My wife Gurpeet and I are thankful to Christ University."
