On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2021, on 8th March, the School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune, Lavasa Campus launched its two-day Gender Justice Lecture Series. The series was organised in collaboration with the Student Bar Association. E-certificates have been awarded to students who participated.

The aim of the Gender Justice Lecture Series was to highlight the contemporary social and legal nuances in the conversation around Gender Justice in India. The lecture focused through guest speakers on interactive and engaging sessions to highlight the on-ground experiences and learnings of activists and lawyers working on gender-related issues.

The guest lectures were as follows:

Lecture on ‘Gender and Sexuality’ by Aanchal Narang, Founder of Another Light Counselling NGO on March 08, 2021.

Aanchal Narang is a trained therapist with a Master's in Applied Clinical Psychology from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai). She specialises in customising mental healthcare practices to suit the healing journeys and coping mechanisms of her clients in the field of trauma, addiction, gender and sexuality. She has conducted multiple training sessions for mental health professionals around queer affirmative counselling especially in the cities of Delhi, Mumbai and Banglore. She has worked extensively in designing workspaces that are inclusive to the marginalised communities by conducting training sessions on mental health awareness, gender and sexuality sensitisation.

Aanchal Narang’s seminar focused on introducing the topic of gender and sexuality to the participants. She focused on the lack of inclusivity in laws for persons belonging to the queer community. Aanchal critiqued the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 which she explained made it more difficult for persons from the transgender community in accessing basic rights and state-supported social welfare benefits. Aanchal spoke about the strong relationship between privilege and heteronormativity to emphasise why the new generation of lawyers needed to adopt more inclusive practises in their everyday institutional workings. She spoke about the need to create laws that allow persons in same-sex relationships to marry, create a joint bank account, take a loan, have insurance and to adopt.

Lecture on ‘Gender and Domestic Violence’ by Adv. Nausheen Yousuf on March 09, 2021.

Adv. Nausheen Yousuf specialises in family, sexual and domestic violence laws. She has over fifteen years of experience as a practising lawyer. Adv. Nausheen was previously associated with Majlis Legal Centre, NGO where she was heading the litigation department. She is the founder of TKNY Legal Advocates and TKNY Legal Reservoir. She has conducted multiple training sessions with various state and non-state stakeholders under the Domestic Violence Act and the Muslim Women's Act.

Adv. Nausheen’s seminar focused on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. She spoke about the gender specificity of the Act and why it was essential for the Act to focus on women as victims. She focused on the steps a woman facing domestic violence should take. She emphasised the legal technicalities of the First Information Report and Non-Cognizable Reports at the Police station. Adv. Nausheen explained through her personal litigation experience the approach of the judiciary towards victims of domestic violence. She explained that apart from the police station, a victim of domestic abuse can also approach other state stakeholders such as doctors and protection officers. In her interaction with the students, Adv. Nausheen elaborated on the repercussions on women accessing their basic rights in marriage as a result of marital rape being criminalised.
