GUEST LECTURE ON "JUS FOR DEBILITATUM" A DAY DEDICATED TO THE SPECIAL ONES

A Guest Lecture was organized by the School of Law on 3rd December 2021 from 10:15 AM to 11:15 AM to recognize and acknowledge the ongoing issues related to the Bhopal gas tragedy and mark the “International Day of Persons with Disabilities”. The occasion was graced by Guest Speaker - Adv Santosh Kumar Rungta who is the Senior Advocate of the Delhi High Court and also the General Secretary of the National Federation for Blinds. The students of 1st and 2nd years attended the lecture and gained insight into the ongoing issues related to the Bhopal gas tragedy and awareness regarding the current legal framework, supporting the disabled in India.

The United Nations General Assembly through its resolution 47/3 established the “International Day of Persons with Disabilities” as an annual commemoration in 1992. The purpose of the Day is to raise awareness about the issues related to differently-abled people and organize support for differently-abled people and rising voices for their dignity, rights, and well-being. Further on this day, in 1984, a gas leak from a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India, spread over a populated area, ultimately resulting in 15,000 to 20,000 deaths and leaving some half-million survivors with chronic medical ailments and disabilities. Now there are second and third-generation children from the survivors who escaped with their lives and these children are being born with a range of disabilities not seen anywhere else in India. Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy (MD), Down's syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), blindness, learning difficulties, and Gross motor delay are common and many of the children, now young adults, have multiple conditions.

The event to mark “The International Day of Disabilities” and ``Bhopal Gas Tragedy” was organized to highlight the “Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act”. It was an enlightening and enriching Session. The guest speaker had vivid illustrations and critical points to bring into focus. The students and participants were presented with thought-provoking aspects of the Act and the scenarios which lead to unwanted difficulties. The lecture was intuitive and informative with the participants learning some ideals and notions untouched by ordinary daily lives. It was good fortune to be inspired by somebody (Guest Speaker) who has passed these associated obstacles himself.
