WORKSHOP ON ‘UNDERSTANDING CYBER SECURITY ATTACK AND DEFENSE VIA LADDER APPROACH’

The Department of Data Science, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, organized a Workshop on 'Understanding Cyber Security Attack and Defence via Ladder Approach' on 5th March 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The Resource Person for the session was Mr Ashok Sharma, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of QOS Technology & PurpleSynapz Labs. The workshop enabled the participants to understand the fundamentals of how data is created, stored, attacked and defended in this connected world.

The workshop commenced with MC, Shreyansh Padarha, 2 BSC DS introducing and welcoming Mr Ashok Sharma. Mr Ashok Sharma began the session by explaining a computer network by using a network diagram of a typical simple home network. Followed by that, he moved on to how India and our world are connected through a vast network and the effects caused by that. He started on how stealing data becomes more accessible with the internet as every time a door opens when a device gets connected.

He demonstrated what magic happens when one opens Google and gave a glance at how we can find an IP address and its details. He shared how the package that was sent and available only in binary language could be captured easily if there is no encryption on it and be recreated before it reaches its destination. He began with the meaning and importance of cyber security based on this. He added on how to protect the data using various ways and that all data in this present world is encrypted by 128bytes and some banks with 512 bytes. The development of encryption is an ongoing process to secure all the data.

He moved on to describe the ladder approach of cyber security in which the first one was an application with a high amount of hacking risks, the second was middleware, the third was Operating systems, and the last, Hardware. In conclusion, he demonstrated how to block the hack or detect the IP address, when and at which level of the ladder, and why did the hack happen.

After this session concluded, the platform was opened for discussion where numerous students put forward their questions which Mr Ashok Sharma answered. The event successfully concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof Libin Chacko Samuel.

  1. What is hacking in cyber security?
Hacking in cyber security services refers to the practice of exploiting vulnerabilities in computer systems, networks, or software to gain unauthorized access or cause harm. Hackers can use various techniques, such as phishing, malware, or exploiting software bugs, to infiltrate systems. While hacking is often associated with illegal activities, ethical hacking, or "white-hat hacking," is used by cybersecurity professionals to identify and fix security weaknesses to protect against malicious attacks.
