WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

Every year, on 19th August, the world comes together to commemorate World Humanitarian Day — a day dedicated to remembering humanitarian workers who put themselves at risk to help others, and to recognize the urgent needs of vulnerable communities around the globe. Observed in memory of the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, which took the lives of 22 humanitarian staff, the day is now a global call to honour the courage, compassion, and sacrifice of those who serve in the world’s most difficult circumstances.

In line with this global tradition, the Centre for Counselling and Health Services (CCHS) at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, hosted an online observance of World Humanitarian Day on 19th August 2025. The program was designed not only to pay tribute to humanitarian workers but also to inspire students to reflect on the essence of humanity and their own role in shaping a compassionate and resilient society.

The theme for 2025, “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities,” provided the guiding framework for the event. It emphasized that communities must not be seen as mere recipients of aid, but as equal partners in creating solutions, decision-making, and building sustainable futures. This theme resonated deeply with the student audience, reminding them that humanitarian values begin at the local level — through empathy, mutual respect, and shared responsibility.

To bring this message alive, CCHS curated a mix of awareness and creative activities:

Instagram Posts: The day began with a series of thought-provoking Instagram posts honouring humanitarian workers worldwide. These posts celebrated the courage of those who continue to serve in conflict zones, disaster-hit areas, and regions of crisis, often at great personal risk. The posts reached the student community online, sparking conversations about the importance of solidarity and service.

Reel Making Competition: A highlight of the program was the reel making competition on the theme “What is Humanity to You?” Students were invited to express their perspectives through short, creative videos. This interactive format not only gave participants a voice but also showcased diverse interpretations of what it means to be humane — from simple acts of kindness in daily life to global calls for justice, equity, and peace. The use of digital platforms ensured wide participation and engagement across the campus community.

By blending digital storytelling with reflective dialogue, the event encouraged students to move beyond abstract concepts of humanitarianism and internalize them as personal values.

Conclusion: The observance of World Humanitarian Day 2025 at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa, was both meaningful and impactful. It reminded the campus community of the immense sacrifices made by humanitarian workers while also reinforcing the need for solidarity in addressing global and local challenges. Through online campaigns and creative competitions, students were given the opportunity to engage actively, reflect deeply, and share their voices on humanity’s core values.

Ultimately, the event went beyond commemoration — it became a call to action. It inspired students to embrace humanitarian values in their own lives, to see themselves as contributors to community well-being, and to recognize that lasting change begins with compassion and responsibility. The commitment of CCHS to promoting awareness and empathy was once again evident, making the day a memorable step in nurturing a socially conscious and globally responsible student community.
