TUESDAY TRIP - A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

As part of an initiative by Director, Fr Jossy George the final year, students of Finance, Marketing and Human Resource get an opportunity to visit various corporate industries in Pune on every Tuesday for a live project. Fr Jossy informed that a faculty member has been appointed at Pune to collaborate with the industries.

After a lot of discussion, Fr Jossy's untiring persistent efforts towards initiating CIP things materialized. It began with high hopes amidst a lot of expectations. All the students unanimously agreed that bookish knowledge is miles away from pactical experience hence such an initiative was worth it.

They felt that they need to be competent enough to handle an unforeseen situation and they are confident that by the end of the year they will be better equipped to handle varied situations with utmost confidence. Some students were proud to admit that they were capable of coming up to the expectations of an industry and it boosted their self-esteem.

Sana Arvish from Finance was apprehensive because she feared that many industries will not encourage them to be a part of their organisation for a day. She felt that it was quite pertinent to build a connection with them. She considers hands on experience to be beneficial as it will enhance knowledge which in turn will affect the performance at the interview.

Aryakrishna from Human Resource articulated that Lavasa is not accesible to many people. The need of the hour is to popularize this beautiful city so that there is no dearth of job opportunities. Through such a live project a student gets exposure to the industry because it is relevent in today’s scenario. The training period will prepare the young and enterprising students for the corporate life.

Jinto Kurian from Finance hopes to get more job opportunities through this initiative. The exposure will enrich a student as he will study the work culture of an industry apart from aquiring theoretical knowledge. It will widen the circle of contacts and eventually help a student get good placement.

Ashish Chacko from Marketing had an interesting experience. The company was impressed by his visit and decided to allow him to be a part of the organisation and work on live projects apart from continuing his internship. It gave him an excellent chance to be in touch with the same company for a longer period of time. He felt that such opportunities can allow a student to convert a short association into a future career possibility. Such opportunities can land an aspiring student into a lucrative career in a dream company. Ashish also felt elated when he got a chance to interact with students from premier colleges such as IIM etc.

Alfred Wilson from Human Resource got a wonderful chance to bridge the gap between corporate culture and college. He felt that the real time work experience gave him an opportunity to know the nuances of an organization. Fortunately Alfred shared good rapport with the corporate mentors. On the flip side he felt that the company’s data was at risk so selective work was assigned.

T A Lakshmi from Marketing considers introducing CIP is a welcome change from routine curriculum. It helps a student to build a good rapport with corporate executives. She feels that the company heads can be invited as a guest lecture at CIM, which will culminate into an interactive session with large number of students. It will help the students to know their business development plan too. Lakshmi feels that sometimes they were given field work, which is not practical for marketing as their visit is time bound. She was disappointed by a few companies which categorically asked for original documents to do CIP.

At the end of the day Christies felt that a flexible approach to handle practical issues was required and a brain storming session often resolved their issues. It will help them to comprehend the nuances of different departments in a company and in turn motivate them to work in tandem with each other. The major pitfalls were shortlisted and they planned strategies to work upon them. Cumbersome travelling combined with a hectic schedule was the only grievance.

The students did not feel demotivated when justified explanation was given by the company executives for not selecting them. At times company policy could not hire a candidate for a day. In a few companies the objectives were not clearly demarcated, whereas some wanted the students to come regularly for a longer time. Despite the hiccups all the students feel that it is worth being a part of CIP. The Christies narrated their experience and agreed upon measures to understand the work ethics of the corporate world and come up to their expectations
