BHASHADAAN 3.0
Continuing its steadfast commitment to promoting India’s linguistic diversity in the digital era, the Department of English and Cultural Studies at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, successfully organized the third phase of the Bhashadaan initiative — Bhashadaan 3.0 on 26 September 2025. Building on the achievements of its earlier editions, this event reaffirmed the Department’s alignment with the Government of India’s vision of fostering linguistic inclusion through the BHASHINI platform, a national mission designed to make digital services accessible in all Indian languages. The platform allows for participants to login and begin translating either sections of various websites and e-content into a regional language that they are proficient in or vice-versa.
Bhashadaan 3.0 aimed to strengthen India’s multilingual digital ecosystem by engaging students in meaningful language data creation and validation activities. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students of the MA English with Digital Humanities programme, who contributed actively to expanding the digital presence of Indian languages. Through hands-on involvement with the BHASHINI portal, participants translated and validated content across key domains such as education, public information, and civic communication, thereby advancing digital accessibility for non-English-speaking users. Their contributions also served as an act of cultural preservation, ensuring that India’s diverse linguistic traditions continue to thrive in digital spaces.
A defining highlight of this edition was the recognition of participants as Bhasha Samarthaks (Language Champions). Each student received an online badge acknowledging their effort and commitment to linguistic inclusion. These badges served as proof of the students’ commitment to the initiative’s goal and inspiring them to continue the mission in the future. The badges served as a symbol of the growing relevance of digital volunteerism in cultural and linguistic activism.
The event fostered insightful discussions on the significance of local languages in digital communication, the socio-cultural implications of linguistic representation, and the evolving landscape of language technologies. These conversations helped participants connect their practical engagement with theoretical frameworks from digital humanities, sociolinguistics, and cultural sustainability, offering them a deeper understanding of how technology intersects with language and identity. The initiative thus blended experiential learning with academic inquiry, reinforcing the Department’s pedagogical focus on critical engagement and reflective practice.
Through Bhashadaan 3.0, the Department of English and Cultural Studies reaffirmed its leadership in integrating academic learning with civic responsibility. The initiative not only enhanced students’ awareness of language equity and digital inclusion but also offered them valuable experience in applying digital tools for cultural preservation. It demonstrated how academic institutions can play a transformative role in bridging linguistic divides and contributing to the development of inclusive digital ecosystems.
Ultimately, Bhashadaan 3.0 underscored the Department’s ongoing commitment to nurturing linguistic pride, cultural consciousness, and digital literacy. By mobilizing student participation in a nationally significant project, the event advanced the goal of ensuring that India’s rich linguistic heritage finds a lasting presence in the digital future. The Department looks forward to the continuation of this initiative in the future, aiming to further the development of the country’s linguistic landscape via the usage of relevant technologies.
