Guest Lecture on Intellectual Property Rights(IPR)

A Guest Lecture on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) was organized for the students of III B.Sc. Data Science, Economics and Analytics, and Computer Applications in collaboration with SDG Cell as part of their academic enrichment program. The session was conducted on 9th October, 2025 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM in Room No: 1127. The primary objective of this lecture was to enhance students’ awareness of Intellectual Property Rights and their significance in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The session began with a brief introduction of the resource persons followed by a warm welcome address. The distinguished speaker of the session is Dr. Niraj Kumar, Assistant Professor and Head of Higher Education and IPR Cell, KPR College of Arts and Science, who is an expert in the field of Intellectual Property and Technology Management. They provided an in-depth overview of the importance of IPR in safeguarding the rights of inventors and creators in a knowledge-based economy.

The lecture began by explaining the concept and scope of Intellectual Property Rights, highlighting how these rights serve as an incentive for innovation and creativity. The resource persons elaborated on the different types of IPR such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, geographical indications, and industrial designs. Each type was explained with relevant examples from academia, business, and technology sectors, enabling students to relate theory to real-world applications.

A significant portion of the session was dedicated to understanding the patent process—from ideation to filing, evaluation, and grant. The speakers emphasized the importance of novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability in patent filing. They also discussed the role of research institutions in promoting patent culture among students and faculty members. The discussion further extended to copyright protection for literary, artistic, and digital works, and the implications of trademark registration for branding and business identity.

The speakers underscored the ethical and legal aspects associated with the use of intellectual property. They highlighted how plagiarism, software piracy, and misuse of creative content can lead to legal consequences and damage an individual’s or organization’s reputation. Through case studies and real-life examples, the speakers illustrated how proper management of intellectual property could enhance innovation, ensure fair recognition, and encourage entrepreneurship among young researchers and innovators.

The session also included an engaging interactive Q&A segment where students raised insightful questions regarding patent eligibility, international protection under the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the procedures involved in applying for patents in India. The speakers addressed each question comprehensively, enriching the participants’ understanding of the subject.

The guest lecture concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the resource persons for their time and valuable insights. The event was highly informative and provided a strong foundation for students to appreciate the importance of intellectual property in academic and professional contexts.

Overall, the session successfully met its objective of imparting awareness about IPR and its role in protecting innovation and fostering creativity. It encouraged students to consider the ethical, legal, and commercial aspects of their research and project work, ultimately inspiring them to become responsible innovators and contributors to the nation’s intellectual capital.
