Training Programme On Academic Leadership



MCE Society's Allana Institute of Management Science in joint association with Centre for Academic Leadership and Education Management (CALEM) (Under the Scheme of PMMMNMTT HRD Ministry, Govt. of India, New Delhi) Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh organized a four day Training Programme on Academic Leadership from 2nd to 5th April 2019 at Azam Campus, Allana Institute of Management, Pune.

It was attended by Dr Dilip Nandkeolyar, Dr Jayant Mahajan, Assistant Professor Sanjay Sahai, Dr Benny Godwin, Counsellor, Ms Arpita Ghosh and Assistant Professor Anita Pandey from Christ Institute of Management, Lavasa.

On 2nd April 2019 the program began with a ceremonial lighting of a lamp in which Coordinator, Fr Arun and Dr Dilip did the honours. The ice breaking session gave an opportunity to the participants to intermingle with each other.

Dr R Ganeshan initiated an informative discussion on dimensions of Academic Leadership and gave an insightful talk on Curriculum, Curricular Development and Pedagogy / Improved Teaching and Learning & Promoting Research. The lectures were interactive, informative and interesting with a wide range of mediums such as video etc. A video on taking an initiative highlighted the importance of making making small efforts at individual level and the outcome is phenomenal. He also spoke at length about approaching curriculum in theory and practice. In this context Bloom's Taxonomy was explained in detail.

Dr Ganeshan's second lecture was equally insightful. He spoke about Balancing Accountability (Including Financial Accountability) and Autonomy Governance. He stressed upon the need to ensure that the policy matches the statement. He asserted that documentation is a must and a study of parameters was a must. He gave experiential tips for a college or a person to be accountable and responsible in his or its dealings. It was quite meaningful and the participants listened attentively and there was an interactive session too.

Then Dr Anwar Sheikh spoke about Internalisation and Collaborations. He chiefly focused on the role of UGC and AICTE. The concluding talk was by Dr. Ashfak Shaikh who spoke eloquently on Use of ICT and Process Reforms for Improved Internal Governance.

On 3rd April 2019 Dr. Moses Kolet spoke in detail about Student Support Services and Placement, Grievance Redressal and Handling Student Issues. The focus was on Actualisation as a mentor. It delved deep into the need to inculcate aesthetic needs, respect for self and others and nurture a need for belongingness. He stressed upon the need for making yourself better every moment as every moment is a learning experience.

The need of the hour is to show empathy towards others in society. It should also include making efforts to look at needs of the person and look for solutions. The efforts have to be customised as per the needs of the student. He said that educational leaders influence very quietly and that is the mark of real innovative leadership. He pointed out that self actualisation is the goal and leadership is a means towards this goal.

It was followed by Mrs. Jayashree Thakare’s erudite talk on Quality Assurance, Accreditation and Enhancement of Institutional Performance. Post lunch Dr. Moses Kolet spoke at length about Handling Student Diversity and coping with Stress along with roles and responsibilities of a principal.

Finally Mrs. Jayashree Thakare’s talk on Institutional Ranking: Indian and International Perspectives/ Strategies for Academic Excellence concluded the events of the day. All the tasks were quite informative and meaningful and the participants were engaged and engrossed in discussions.

Day three of the program began on a positive note. Dr R Ganesan spoke in his invincible style and it was full of practical wisdom. He began the session with a quick recap. The participants were instructed to write two lessons learnt in the past two sessions. It was quite interactive and valuable inputs were given.

Dr Ganesan stressed upon the need to practice time management on a daily basis. Accountability for one's own actions must be in tandem with the need for regulations. He motivated the participants to be self motivated in order to start the journey of transformation. They should be disciplined and thereby bring about fiscal discipline in business. He shared a soul stirring video which was extremely thought provoking.

Dr Ganesan further elaborated on the attributes of leadership and said that self diagnosis or self introspection is a must. He gave real life examples on the nuances of leadership. He concluded his intensively informative talk by motivating the participants to be a value thinker with I care attitude. Moreover, they ought to remember that small changes will certainly bring big results if they are able to convert constraints into resources.

According to him experiential leadership is very important and leaders must take initiative  and questions constraints. Academic Leadership involves aligning people and leadership provides motivation. He quoted Jim Collins' tasks about level 5 leader and mentioned that an individual who blends extreme personal humility with intense professional is a true leader.

Post lunch sessions were also informative. Dr MD Lawrence spoke at length about Effective Leadership and Strategic Planning. He chiefly focused on assessment of case studies using emotional intelligence. He also gave a detailed interpretation of the role of a leader.

On the last day of the meaningful faculty development program Dr Atik Sagar Shaikh's session was about Interface with Regulatory Bodies. He referred to facts and stressed upon the need for establishing a uniform yardstick. Dr Ganesan Ramaswamy's session on Budgetary Process and Strategies for Effective Resource Mobilization was extremely informative and useful.

He specially mentioned that financial prudence must be always kept in mind. He spoke about deployment in the form of Capex and Opex along with return of debt because value of money is important in the present time. He concluded his session by giving an insight into the points to be remembered while preparation of budget.

A special interactive session on team building was organized for the participants by Dr Nilofer and Ms Sadaf. It was a fun filled interactive session.

It was followed by the valedictory ceremony. Chief Guest, Dr. Tariq Mansoor, VC, AMU, Dr. AR Kidwai, Director HRDC, AMU and Project Coordinator for CALEM, President, MCE Society, Dr P A Inamdar and VP, MCE Society, Mrs Abeda Inamdar graced the occasion.

Dignitaries were felicitated and it was followed by felicitation of PhD awardees of AIMS. To commemorate excellent work by an academician and educationalist with a vision, Excellence award was given to Dr VSN Rao, Principal, Mhasla College.

 At the end Dr. R. Ganesan successfully coordinated the concluding session wherein selected participants shared their experience and discussed key learning from the four day program in coordination with implementation ideas. The entire event brought forth many innovative ideas by the participants and ways and means of implementing them in their respective institutes or colleges.

Dr Chhaya Mitter, Principal, P. D. Karkhanis Commerce and Arts  College, Ambernath, Thane felt privileged to be a part of the programme. She felt that the entire trainig  programme was well managed and all the sessions were relevant to the present education scenario. According to her observation Dr Ganesan's session were ,with witty, informative, motivational with a dash of humour. His energy, in depth knowledge and wonderful insight was appreciated by everyone.

The eventful four days ended with distribution of certificates.
