International Yoga Day

On the occasion of International Yoga Day, celebrated globally on 21st June 2025, the Centre for Counselling and Health Services (CCHS) organized a revitalizing and inclusive yoga session aimed at promoting overall wellness, mindfulness, and healthy living within the campus community. This thoughtfully curated event brought together faculty members, administrative staff, and students in a unified space of reflection and rejuvenation. The session was designed not only to enhance physical well-being but also to emphasize mental clarity and emotional balance—key aspects of holistic health. By encouraging collective participation, the event fostered a spirit of togetherness, demonstrating how wellness practices like yoga can build stronger, more connected communities.

The event began with a warm welcome, followed by an insightful introduction to the origins and philosophy of yoga. Participants were briefed on yoga’s rich heritage rooted in ancient Indian culture and its evolution as a globally embraced practice for achieving harmony of the body, mind, and spirit. The facilitator explained that the word “yoga” means “union”—symbolizing a profound connection between individual consciousness and universal energy. This foundation helped set an intentional and reflective tone for the session, preparing participants for a deeper engagement with the practice.

After the introduction, the session moved into the practical segment, where participants were guided through a series of gentle yet impactful yoga asanas (postures). Each posture was thoughtfully selected to suit individuals of all fitness levels and experience. The facilitator demonstrated every pose with clarity, offering modifications as needed and explaining the associated physical and psychological benefits. From improving posture and joint mobility to reducing muscle stiffness and boosting circulation, the asanas provided participants with tools to incorporate into their daily routines. Several poses specifically addressed stress relief and energy balance, encouraging the idea that even a short daily practice can yield meaningful results.

One of the most enriching elements of the session was the focused introduction to pranayama, or conscious breath control. Participants practiced a variety of techniques, including deep diaphragmatic breathing and alternate nostril breathing, guided to observe the calming effects these methods have on the nervous system. The exercises illustrated how something as simple as breath awareness can have a significant influence on mood, stress levels, and cognitive clarity. Many participants reported feeling lighter, calmer, and more present, even within minutes.

Beyond movement and breath, the facilitator emphasized that yoga is a way of life, encompassing mindfulness, discipline, and emotional regulation. The audience was encouraged to extend yoga beyond the mat by incorporating its values into everyday decisions—through mindful eating, thoughtful communication, intentional living, and regular self-care practices.

The session concluded with a brief guided meditation and a moment of gratitude, allowing participants to reflect inward and absorb the benefits of the experience. The shared stillness brought a profound sense of peace and unity among attendees. Many expressed their appreciation for the session and showed keen interest in continuing their yoga journey.

In summary, the International Yoga Day celebration hosted by CCHS was more than just a wellness event—it was a reminder of the potential we all have to pause, realign, and thrive. CCHS remains committed to nurturing mental, physical, and emotional wellness through such transformative initiatives.
