Alternate Dispute Resolution Guest Lecture and Evaluation
Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) is a mechanism for resolving disputes outside of the traditional court system. In India, there are several forms of ADR, including mediation, conciliation, and arbitration. These mechanisms are becoming increasingly popular in India due to their effectiveness in resolving disputes in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Ms. Pooja Kannurkar who was the resource person of the event is a notable person in the field of ADR mechanisms, with a wealth of experience and expertise. She is presently working as a member of ADR ODR International, UK, an organization that provides online dispute resolution services to clients worldwide.
During the event, Ms. Kannurkar conducted two classes, with the first class taking place on the 10th May aimed at second-year students. The class covered the topic of why and how ADR mechanisms work and the different kinds of ADR that are available. The students had the opportunity to learn about the advantages of ADR mechanisms over traditional court systems and the various forms of ADR that can be used to resolve disputes.
Ms. Kannurkar emphasized the importance of ADR mechanisms in modern times, especially in India, where the court system is often overwhelmed and bogged down with a large number of pending cases. She highlighted the benefits of ADR mechanisms, including the speed and cost-effectiveness of the process, as well as the confidentiality and flexibility that ADR provides.
The students were also introduced to the different forms of ADR mechanisms, including mediation, conciliation, and arbitration. Ms. Kannurkar explained the differences between these mechanisms, their advantages and disadvantages, and when they might be most appropriate to use.
The students had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussions, which helped to deepen their understanding of the topic. Ms. Kannurkar's expertise and experience in the field of ADR mechanisms allowed her to provide detailed and insightful answers to the students' questions.
On the second day of the event, i.e., 11th May , Ms. Kannurkar took a class for third and fourth-year law students. The focus of this class was on the career opportunities available to law students in the field of ADR mechanisms.
Ms. Kannurkar highlighted the growing demand for ADR professionals, both in India and globally, and the various career paths available to law students in this field. She discussed the different roles that law students could pursue, such as mediators, arbitrators, conciliators, and ADR trainers.
The class also covered the qualifications and skills required for different roles in the field of ADR mechanisms. Ms. Kannurkar stressed the importance of strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deep understanding of legal concepts and principles.
The students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn from Ms. Kannurkar's extensive experience in the field. They were able to gain insights into the various career opportunities available to them, and the skills and qualifications required to succeed in this field.
Ms. Kannurkar provided practical examples of negotiation tactics and strategies used in real-world scenarios, helping the students to better understand how to apply these tactics in different situations. The class also covered the importance of effective communication in negotiation, and how to build trust and rapport with the other party.The highlight of the second day was the workshop which was held in the Smart room of central campus. In the workshop, students were able to practice their negotiation skills in a controlled environment. This allowed them to experiment with different negotiation tactics and learn from their mistakes without the risk of real-world consequences. The competition provided an additional challenge for the students, requiring them to use their negotiation skills in a competitive environment.
After a close competition, the Best Negotiating Team and the team with the Best Negotiating Strategy were decided. The competition was not only a fun and engaging way for students to apply their negotiation skills, but it also allowed them to receive feedback on their performance and learn from their peers.
In conclusion, the event organized by the ADR Committee of the school of law was a valuable learning experience for the students. Ms. Pooja Kannurkar's classes provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of ADR mechanisms and negotiation tactics, and the students were able to apply this knowledge in the workshop and competition.
