Social Awareness Program on “Basics of Online Safety and Digital Literacy” - Department of Data Science

The Centre of Excellence, CyberPeace Foundation and Department of Data Science, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus organised a Social Awareness Program on “Basics of Online Safety and Digital Literacy”. It was held on 24th June 2021 from 11.30 AM to 1 PM to engage in the topic of safe online practices and understand the digital medium. 

The talk started with MC Simran Singh, 1 Year BSc Data Science Student welcoming the audience to the event. This was followed by Dr Kedar Vishnu, who delivered the welcome address. The MC engaged in an interactive session with the audience members asking their opinions on online security and practices.  The resource person of the event, Ms  Janice Verghese, Manager - Communications and Training with the CyberPeace Foundation, was introduced. 


Ms Verghese started the session by introducing the concept of an introduction to Digital Literacy. She covered the various ways in which data is collected and stolen. She elaborated on Phishing, Vishing, Smishing and Social Engineering, etc., by giving apt examples and case studies and avoiding falling into their traps. She talked about how an attacker sends a fraudulent message designed to trick a human victim into revealing sensitive information to the attacker or to deploy malicious software on the victim's infrastructure like ransomware.



She insisted on not believing everything we see online and being careful while coming across the information. She informed about many techniques to cross-check the info, such as Reverse Image Search to cross-check the truth behind every information on digital platforms. She also warned against the spread of fake news and listed websites like Alt News, Boom Live, Fact Checker to verify them. 

Ms Verghese continued to throw light on what Digital Literacy is and covered to be resilient for cyber-crimes. She talked about the different forms that are available to protect yourself against cybercrimes such as: Violation of Privacy Form, Violation of copyright form OR Copyright Infringement Form, DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) Takedown Form, De-index, Complaint’s registration form.


Ms Verghese answered questions from the audience during the Q&A sessions about Online Safety and Digital Literacy. Ms Verghese interacted with the audience by giving apt and valuable responses. The event concluded with Prof KT Thomas delivering the vote of thanks. The programme ended with the Christ anthem being played.

The programme was an informative, which gave the participants’ confidence about secure online practices and protecting themselves against cyberattacks and data breaches.
