Online Workshop on Digital Portfolio

On November 8, 2024, the Department of Languages organized an insightful workshop titled Digital Portfolios: Aligning with SDG Goal 4: Quality Education. The session, conducted by Dr. Dilip Barad, Professor and Head of the Department at Maharaj Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, Gujarat, was held from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM in Room 2111, Management Block. This workshop catered specifically to the students of the MA English with Digital Humanities (MAEDH) program, providing them with both theoretical and practical knowledge about creating digital portfolios.

The session began with Dr. Barad emphasizing the importance of digital portfolios in today’s interconnected world. He underscored that in an era where technology is rapidly transforming every aspect of life, it is imperative for students and professionals to present their skills, achievements, and creative outputs through accessible digital mediums. Highlighting the relevance of Sustainable Development Goal 4, which advocates inclusive and equitable quality education, Dr. Barad linked the concept of digital portfolios to lifelong learning and global employability.

Dr. Barad delved into the theoretical framework of digital portfolios, explaining their multifaceted benefits. He discussed how digital portfolios serve as dynamic repositories of one’s academic, creative, and professional journey. According to him, a well-designed portfolio should reflect an individual’s unique capabilities, academic milestones, creative ventures, and skills, all presented through multimedia formats for a comprehensive showcase.

A key highlight of the workshop was the inclusion of generative AI in portfolio creation. Dr. Barad demonstrated the potential of tools like ChatGPT for enhancing content creation, organizing ideas, and brainstorming creative elements. By integrating AI, he showcased how technology can amplify pedagogical practices and assist students in crafting professional and engaging portfolios with minimal technical expertise.

The hands-on aspect of the workshop was particularly engaging. Dr. Barad introduced Google Sites as an accessible platform for creating digital portfolios. He explained its intuitive interface, which requires no programming knowledge, making it ideal for students and educators alike. Participants were guided step-by-step on using the platform, from choosing templates and customizing layouts to embedding multimedia content like images, videos, and documents. Dr. Barad also shared exemplary portfolios created by literature students, which inspired attendees to visualize their potential projects.

The interactive nature of the session stood out as Dr. Barad encouraged students to create drafts of their digital portfolios during the workshop. He provided immediate feedback and constructive criticism, enabling participants to refine their designs and content. This personalized guidance was immensely beneficial, ensuring that every student left with a clear understanding of how to create a meaningful online presence.

In conclusion, the workshop was a resounding success. It not only introduced the students to the concept and importance of digital portfolios but also empowered them with the tools and knowledge to create their own. Dr. Barad’s emphasis on building a personal brand in the digital era resonated with the audience, leaving them motivated to embrace this vital skill. The workshop fostered quality education and equipped students with essential skills for their academic and professional growth.
