Expanding Your Horizons: A Workshop on Global Networking & Application Strategies for Career and Education

The workshop, "Expanding Your Horizons: A Workshop on Global Networking & Application Strategies for Career and Education," took place on November 30, 2024, at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus. The session featured Dr. Nupoor Ranade, Assistant Professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, as the keynote speaker. The event aimed to provide students with practical tools and strategies to excel in a globally connected academic and professional environment. Dr. Ranade delivered an insightful and engaging lecture emphasising the critical role of networking for the purpose of career growth. She highlighted how opportunities often stem from trust and genuine connections built over time.
The session focused on the importance of platforms like LinkedIn as indispensable tools for students to network in professional spaces. Dr. Ranade encouraged students to participate in conferences and workshops, which she described as ideal spaces to meet individuals who share their academic and professional interests and aspirations. A notable highlight of her talk was the emphasis on the role of mentors. She stressed the significance of identifying role models at various stages of their careers to understand potential pathways for professional growth. However, she urged students to follow their unique interests and aspirations rather than ignorantly replicating someone else’s journey. This perspective encouraged participants to use mentorship to guide their individualised career maps. Dr. Ranade also introduced the concept of an elevator pitch, which is a short, impactful introduction consisting of anywhere between 30 seconds and 1 minute.
It is designed to capture interest quickly. She explained the necessity of having a clear, engrossing self-presentation ready for interactions with potential mentors, collaborators, or employers. Moreover, she integrated modern technology into this concept by recommending AI-based tools, like ChatGPT, to refine and personalise elevator pitches. This blend of traditional and contemporary techniques gave attendees a practical skillset for real-world scenarios. An interactive component of the workshop involved a review of digital portfolios created by the participants. Dr. Ranade evaluated each portfolio, offering constructive feedback to enhance their impact and effectiveness.
This segment highlighted the importance of presenting oneself professionally in digital spaces, a skill increasingly critical in today’s competitive landscape. Students found this personalised guidance invaluable for their professional development. The interactive session was another notable aspect, encouraging students to engage with the speaker and share their perspectives actively. This open dialogue created a dynamic learning atmosphere, motivating participants to take actionable steps in their career planning. Dr. Ranade’s insights and approachable demeanour made the workshop both informative and inspiring. The event successfully addressed contemporary needs such as employability and skill development.
It encouraged participants to adopt a proactive approach to networking, career planning, and professional self-presentation. The attendees ensured a personalised experience, making the session impactful and engaging. The workshop’s focus on building analytical, strategic, and creative skills reflected the university’s commitment to fostering holistic development among its students. Combining traditional wisdom, modern tools, and personalised guidance, the session left an indelible mark on participants, equipping them to navigate global opportunities confidently and clearly.
