Storytelling Carnival

On October 11, 2024, the Department of Languages hosted a Storytelling Carnival to commemorate the birth anniversary of the eminent Indian author R.K. Narayan. Held in the Smart Room of the MBA Block, the event ran from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM and was attended by faculty members of the Department of Languages along with students from the first and second-year MA English and Digital Humanities (MAEDH) programs. The celebration aimed to honor the literary genius of R.K. Narayan while providing students with an opportunity to engage with Indian literature and explore the art of storytelling in its various forms.

The event commenced with a screening of the first episode of Malgudi Days, the iconic television series based on R.K. Narayan’s short stories. The screening not only introduced students to Narayan's evocative narrative style but also provided a glimpse into the idyllic world of Malgudi, a fictional town that captures the essence of small-town India. The visual experience allowed students to immerse themselves in the simplicity, humor, and profound human insights that characterize Narayan’s works.

Following the screening, an in-depth discussion on R.K. Narayan’s life and literary contributions ensued. The objective of this discussion was to foster a deeper understanding of Narayan’s works, introduce students to the richness of Indian literature, and encourage them to appreciate storytelling as a powerful medium of expression. Faculty members and students alike engaged in thoughtful exchanges, reflecting on the enduring relevance of Narayan’s themes and the unique qualities of his storytelling.

The conversation revolved around several recurring motifs in Narayan’s works, such as nostalgia, the innocence of childhood, the creation of imaginary spaces, and the distinct Indianness that permeates his narratives. Students shared their interpretations and insights, exploring how Narayan’s characters and settings evoke a universal sense of familiarity and warmth. They also delved into his ability to portray the complexities of human relationships and everyday life with remarkable simplicity and wit. The discussion highlighted Narayan’s talent for blending humor with subtle social commentary, making his works timeless and relatable across generations.

The Storytelling Carnival proved to be a meaningful and enriching experience for all participants. It not only celebrated the literary legacy of R.K. Narayan but also encouraged students to reflect on the power of storytelling in shaping cultural and emotional understanding. Narayan’s enduring legacy and served as a reminder of the transformative power of stories in understanding human experiences and cultural identities.
