Business Intelligence using Power BI

The “Business Intelligence using Power BI, 3 - Hour Value- Added Course” was a five-day skill development program held from 2nd to 6th June 2025 at the CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus. It was organized by CHRIST Infotech in collaboration with the School of Sciences, with the goal of enhancing both student proficiency and faculty exposure in one of the most in-demand tools in the analytics domain — Microsoft Power BI.

The workshop was carefully structured to cater to III Semester M.Sc. Data Science students and also included active participation from faculty members of the Data Science department. It focused on equipping participants with practical, industry-relevant skills in data analysis and visualization.

Throughout the five days, the sessions provided in-depth, hands-on training on:

  • Data import, cleaning, and transformation
  • Data modeling and DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) formulas
  • Creating dynamic and interactive dashboards
  • Integrating Python scripts into Power BI
  • Visual storytelling using maps, charts, and slicers
  • Power BI Service (publishing and sharing reports online)

The workshop format included live demonstrations, practice datasets, case-based learning, and collaborative exercises. For students, it offered a platform to apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting, thereby improving their analytical thinking, creativity, and presentation skills. For faculty, it served as an opportunity to upgrade their technical knowledge, stay aligned with industry practices, and explore new methodologies to enhance classroom engagement.

A major highlight was the guest session by Dr. Jibrel Jose, who delivered an inspiring talk on the real-world applications of data analytics and the importance of effective data management. His insights provided a rich industry perspective, adding significant value for both students and academic staff.

To promote peer learning and leadership, one student was given the chance to lead a session, which was well-received and demonstrated the strength of collaborative education. This also encouraged faculty to consider integrating more student-led discussions into their curriculum.

Ms. Ananya Mitra also contributed by delivering an insightful session on Power BI Service, guiding students on how to publish, share, and manage reports and dashboards effectively using the cloud-based Power BI platform. Her session added significant value to the overall learning experience. Special thanks are also extended to Dr. Lija Jacob for her constant support and encouragement to the students throughout the workshop.

On the final day, participants showcased their learning through dashboard presentations based on selected Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Working individually or in teams, students selected datasets and built insightful dashboards that aligned with their chosen SDG. The best presentations were recognized with cash prizes, generously sponsored by Dr. Jibrel Jose, encouraging innovation and excellence.

The event concluded on a high note, having successfully met its objective of building technical expertise, encouraging creativity, and strengthening academic-industry connection. For students, it marked a significant step toward becoming industry-ready data professionals, while for faculty, it was a valuable professional development experience that supported the continued evolution of the department’s teaching standards.

The winners of the dashboard competition were:

Vaishnav — First Prize

The Power BI workshop provided an excellent platform for students to bridge theoretical concepts with practical application. Through hands-on exercises, real-time problem-solving, and the mini project, students not only strengthened their technical skills but also developed critical thinking and data storytelling abilities. The active participation and enthusiasm displayed throughout the workshop reflected the effectiveness of the learning process. This initiative once again demonstrated CHRIST (Deemed to be University)'s strong focus on delivering industry-oriented, experiential learning, preparing students to excel in the evolving field of data science and analytics.
