Pandemic: Building a fairer and healthier world

The Student Bar Association under The School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus with the guidance of Prof. Dr Daisy Alexander, the Head of the Department, School of Law organized a Panel Discussion on April 07, 2021, to mark the International World Health Day.  The event was aimed at celebrating the founding of the World Health Organization for the overall development and fostering of security in health, conducting research, enhancement of partnerships and the strengthening of healthcare systems at local and national levels. The theme for this year was Pandemic: A Fairer and Healthier World. The onset of the CoVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has deeply impacted the healthcare sectors across the globe. India has been severely affected by the pandemic which has exacerbated and deepened the systemic and infrastructural challenges in the Indian healthcare system. The vulnerable communities across India, those most in need of healthcare services have further been marginalised as the pandemic widens the inequalities in the health sector. Equity in healthcare services is an obstacle that public health advocates have been concerned about in the light of the pandemic especially for developing countries in the Global South. By the way of this panel discussion, valuable insights of field experts addressing the disparity in healthcare came together and various challenges were identified during the discussion.

The speakers were welcomed by Dr Daisy Alexander, the Head of Department and Rev. Fr. Dr Jossy P. George. Her outreach for this event helped the School of Law to have contributions from esteemed personalities from the field of health care. Industry and healthcare experts Lt. Gen. Dr Umesh Kumar Sharma, Dr Vivek Tilwani, Dr Ravi Kothari and Dr Arundhati Chavan shared their expertise in the sector and educated the audience with the world over the crisis and various measures to curb the same. The event was moderated by Col. (Dr.) VPN Thomas on Zoom online platform and the same was live telecasted on YouTube (https://youtu.be/V5d2nv4KRLY). The vote of thanks was extended by Ms Mehak Vohra, Assistant Professor, School of Law on behalf of the faculty members and the Student Bar Association.
