Webinar on 'Report Writing' by The Department of Data Science


The Department of Data Science, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, organized a Webinar on 'Research Writing' on 10 August 2021. . The resource person is the reputed Dr Nilanjan Dev, who engaged in the topic of research writing. The webinar was attended by about 79 participants consisting of students and faculty members.



Prof. Ruchika Rai began the webinar by welcoming all the participants to the webinar. She introduced the day's topic by discussing research writing and how research must be encouraged in university. Dr Fr Jossy P. George, Dean and Director, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, addressed the audience by expressing his eagerness for the event and expected it to be an insightful session. Ms Ruchika Rai introduced the speaker, Dr Nilanjan Dey and talked about his significant contribution to the research field.


Dr Nilanjan Dey started the webinar by beginning with the fundamental definition of research. He broke down the various aspects of the research. He covered the different types of research, such as descriptive, analytical, fundamental, applied, quantitative, qualitative, conceptual, empirical, clinical, diagnostic, and historical research. He gave a clear explanation of what each of the research types entails, the purpose of each kind and provided ample examples of each. He also talked about case series, case reports, cohort studies and more, explaining each descriptively.


He broke down the problem of selecting a research topic and talked about what must be kept in mind while trying to find a research topic. He explained that the topic must be one of the researcher's interests, must be relevant to their field of study, and must align with the current issues while providing a solution to the problem based on context and other factors that must be kept in mind before going into writing the paper. He then explained the eleven elements that must be considered, as proposed by Reis (1999).

He explained the steps of writing a research paper, starting from identifying the subject area to gathering information and writing the paper and finally publishing the results. He used vibrant illustrations, which helped understand the concepts better. He said that research could be understood as a story, following the same pattern of process. Beginning with the plot, the introduction, arriving at the problem, which includes all the discussions around the topic and ending with the resolution that compares to the research results and conclusion. He also briefly went through the types of scientific papers and articles that are there in the research field.


He discussed the structure of a research paper in IMRDC format. He briefly explained each part of the paper and demonstrated why they are essential and contribute to the research paper. He talked about the importance of literature review, the methodology used, how to write the body of the paper and how to cite carefully and more under this topic. He also gave practical tips on some of the Dos and Don't that must be kept in mind while writing the paper.

He moved on to answering the various questions raised by the audience on research writing. Dr Nilanjan Dey explained and cleared all their doubts by providing apt answers. He concluded the session with a lot of insights he has gained from his journey as a researcher. Dr Samiksha Shukla, Head of the Department, gave the vote of thank bringing the webinar to an end.
