Orientation cum Bridge Course

The orientation programme for the academic year 2023 was inaugurated on August 10, 2023 at 10 AM. The inaugural ceremony ‘23, titled ‘Ignite’ of the MA English with Digital Humanities Students from Department of Languages was organised in collaboration with the School of Commerce, Finance and Accountancy along with the Department of Data Science. The inaugural address was delivered by the Dean and Director, Dr. Fr. Lijo Thomas followed by the address of the Head of Department. Fr. Justin Varghese, the Academic Coordinator addressed the students after the inaugural ceremony on “CMI: Ethos of CHRIST, Philosophy of Holistic Education & Graduate Attributes”. followed by lunch. Post lunch, Dr. Richa, the Head of the Department introduced the students to all the faculty members of the Department and introduced them to Digital Humanities. Day 1 orientation session concluded with the students attending Class Synergy which was conducted by Dr. Jibrael Jos.


The second day of the orientation sessions for the MA English with Digital Humanities students began with a two-part session on “Literature through the Ages”. The session was taught by Ms Jessia Saji in the first half and by Ms Elizabeth Varkey. The students then broke for their lunch break. The first session post-lunch consisted of an orientation given by Ms Arpita Ghosh regarding the Centre for Counselling and Health Services and the services and options they provide to students for both their physical and mental well-being. the students were led on a campus tour by Ms Jessia. The students were directed to places in the Management Block as well as in the Central Block. Concluding the tour, the students were brought back to the Management Block for their final session for the day. The final session consisted of a session conducted by Mr Vishak from the IT Office who oriented the students regarding the IT facilities available on-campus as well as a brief tutorial regarding the Knowledge Pro ERP system. This marked the end of the second day.


Day 3 began with lectures designed under bridge course by Mr. Aaron George on “Digital Humanities, Interdisciplinarity & Relevance” followed by orientation on discipline, etiquette, and grooming by Dr. Alpana Akolkar. The day concluded with the second class synergy session engaged by Dr. Alpana Akolkar and Ms. Christine Samuel.


The first session of Day 4 began with an Academic Skills Assessment. In the next session the Registrar, Dr Anil Joseph Pinto addressed the students. He spoke at length about the way in which the programme MA in English with DH was conceived and designed. He also touched on how storage and dissemination technologies have evolved over the ages starting from speech, to script to printing to the emerging digital technologies today. He urged the students to keep their learning broad and keep up their enthusiasm. The orientation session by Mr. Prakash P S, Sports Facilitator at CHRIST Lavasa and Ms. Mariya K Joseph, Coordinator for Centre for Social Action (CSA) introduced students to various avenues to explore and hone their talents and passions in the field of sports and social action.

This Library Resources Orientation session by Dr Praveen Vaidya introduced the students to the Knimbus platform and various e resources at their disposal. The day ended with a guided tour of the library premises in the Management Block.


On Day 4 Mr. Aaron George engaged the first session by informing the students of the Ethics and Privacy in Academics, followed by orientation from the centres of SWO & Student Council by Ms. Pritty Jain and Mr. Naive Eapen respectively. Post lunch the students attended an orientation from the Accommodation and Security Services and Examination office.

The Day 5 began with a session on “Theatre and DH” by Dr Jibrael Jos. After the session the students had a short break. Later, they had an online session taken by two profound DH experts Ms Sharanya Ghosh and Ms Vasundhra on “DH opportunities.” It was an engaging session where the speakers took them through various dimensions of Digital Humanities and how it is the need of the hour. The students had a short session with Prof. Samson on Class Synergy. Dr Shobana Mathews, Head, School of Arts and Humanities, Christ, Bangalore Central Campus joined a session to interact with the students of MA English with Digital Humanities. After a fruitful discussion with Dr Shobana, the students were oriented by Ms Vishnu on CHRIST Original Studio and invited the interested students to join and be part of the studio. Later, the faculties introduced their clubs to the students after the Class teacher’s note. As it was the last day of orientation, Ms Jessia delivered the vote of thanks and Dr Richa adjourned the session.

OUTCOME

● To familiarise students with the history of English literature

● To apply digital tools to analyse texts

● To understand the scope of Digital Humanities

● To equip students with skills to bridge the past and the future through literature and technology.
● To internalise the vision and mission of the programme MA in English with Digital Humanities
