From Ideas to Innovation

The Centre for Academic and Professional Support (CAPS) at Pune Lavasa Campus, in collaboration with the Center for Research, hosted an enriching guest lecture titled “From Idea to Innovation: The Student Research Journey” on May 2, 2025 from 4:45 to 6:00 pm in Room no. 1202, Central Block. This event was part of CAPS’ ongoing efforts to encourage students to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and build a strong foundation in academic research.

The session was conducted by Dr. Preethi N, Associate Professor at the Center for Research, Lavasa Campus. Known for her expertise in machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and neural networks, Dr. Preethi has a commendable academic track record, with several research publications, patents, and honors to her name. Her approachable and insightful style made the session both informative and engaging for the audience.

Dr. Preethi began the session by breaking down the concept of research in a way that felt accessible and inspiring. She highlighted that innovation isn’t always about creating something entirely new—it can also be about seeing existing ideas in a fresh light or applying knowledge in new ways. She emphasized that research is both a creative and systematic process that helps us better understand the world and solve real problems.

A major part of her talk focused on the growing research culture at the Lavasa campus. She shared how students have increasingly started taking interest in research and how initiatives from CAPS and the Center for Research are supporting this momentum. She also spoke about the importance of starting early, and how even undergraduate students can meaningfully contribute to research through mini-projects and interdisciplinary topics.

Dr. Preethi then walked the students through the step-by-step process of writing a research paper, from identifying a topic and reviewing existing literature to designing methodology, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. What made the session especially valuable was how she broke down each stage using relatable examples and simple language, making it less intimidating for students who are new to research.

One of the most appreciated segments of the lecture was when she talked about how to begin with mini research projects. She encouraged students to start small, explore topics they are genuinely curious about, and to not be afraid of experimenting. Her advice was particularly motivating for students who had the interest but didn’t know where to begin.

The session ended with a vibrant Q&A, where students asked about topic selection, publication opportunities, time management, and research-writing techniques. Dr. Preethi answered every question patiently, offering useful tips and encouraging students to make the most of the support systems available on campus.

In all, the session was not just informative—it was truly empowering. It helped students see research not just as an academic requirement, but as a meaningful journey of exploration and impact. With clearer direction, practical advice, and plenty of inspiration, students left the room ready to turn their ideas into innovation.
