Objectives:

Promote a reading culture among students and staff

Illustrate how reading contributes to success in academics and careers

Share real-life examples of reading as a tool for growth

Session Highlights:

The event commenced with a silent prayer, followed by the felicitation of panelists by the Librarian. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Jibrael Jos, who initiated the conversation by posing relevant and thought-provoking questions to the panelists.

One of the key questions discussed was about the role of book-based movies or videos in classroom discussions.

Mr. Kalpesh Patkar emphasized that while such media can be valuable, visiting or exploring the actual locations referenced in the stories adds a deeper layer of understanding.

Mr. Shankaran Iyer highlighted the importance of verifying facts, noting that movies often aim to cater to narratives and audience preferences, and authentic references are crucial.

Another question raised was: "Which book do you like more than any you've ever read?"

Mr. Kalpesh Patkar mentioned that he doesn't evaluate books in that manner but is often drawn to works based on the author's credibility.

Other panelists recommended their favourite impactful books, creating a diverse reading list for participants.

The host encouraged the audience to ask questions. Some key queries included:

Which books are more effective—self-help or others?

Is there a language barrier to gaining knowledge?

Which is more important: reading or listening?

In response to the audience’s questions, the panel collectively shared several valuable insights:

Books as Self-Help Tools: Dr. Anil Dsouza highlighted that any book can serve as a self-help tool, depending on how the reader engages with it. The transformative potential of reading lies in the perspective and application of the content.

Language is No Barrier to Knowledge: Both Dr. Alpana Akolkar and Mr. Kalpesh Patkar emphasized that knowledge transcends language. Readers can access meaningful information in any language, and the focus should remain on understanding rather than linguistic limitations.

Importance of Reading and Listening: Dr. Anil Dsouza reiterated that reading and listening are equally vital for holistic learning. Both forms of engagement complement each other in the process of knowledge acquisition and critical thinking.

Personal Reading Choices: Dr. Alpana Akolkar noted that every reader’s interest in books is deeply personal and cannot be judged by popularity or bestseller lists. She encouraged students to explore books that align with their own thoughts, experiences, and growth journeys, rather than being influenced by trends.

Toward the end, Mr. Shankaran Iyer inspired participants to read as much as possible, stressing its importance in career preparation, especially placements.
