World Red Cross Day

The Centre for Counselling and Health Services (CCHS) observed World Red Cross Day on 8th May 2025 with a thoughtful and engaging health awareness initiative. The observance focused on promoting health, hygiene, and community values among students while honouring the humanitarian spirit that the day represents. Celebrated annually on the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Red Cross and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, the day serves as a reminder of the importance of service, compassion, and care in society.

As part of the initiative, the CCHS Health Desk created and circulated a short, student-friendly video. This video shared simple, practical tips on how to stay healthy and maintain physical and mental well-being. The tips included reminders about the importance of staying hydrated, following a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, practising good personal hygiene, and getting enough sleep. In addition, the video touched upon managing academic stress and taking time for relaxation—key concerns for today’s student population. The emphasis was on small, manageable lifestyle changes that can make a big difference over time. The video was circulated among the students of both the Central and Management blocks, ensuring that the message reached a wide audience.

To complement the video, visually appealing and informative health tip charts were displayed on the notice boards of the Central Block and the Management Block. These charts offered additional guidance on maintaining cleanliness, menstrual hygiene, handwashing techniques, mental well-being, and other relevant health practices. The content was designed to be easy to read, relatable, and visually engaging so that students could absorb the information at a glance during their day-to-day movements through campus. The aim was to make health education an integrated part of the campus environment, promoting awareness through repeated visual exposure.

In the current context, with growing awareness around personal health, mental wellness, and the aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic, initiatives like these are especially significant. Students today face numerous pressures—academically, socially, and emotionally. In such a scenario, consistent efforts to reinforce healthy habits and self-care practices become vital. The observance of World Red Cross Day provided an opportunity not only to highlight these practices but also to encourage a culture of empathy and collective care.

Beyond promoting good health, the day also serves to inspire a sense of service and social responsibility. What drives individuals to serve the community and humanity often stems from a deep sense of empathy, solidarity, and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the lives of others. It is this humanitarian spirit that the Red Cross movement embodies, and days like this help foster those same values in younger generations. Encouraging students to reflect on these ideals helps cultivate a more compassionate, connected, and resilient community.

The World Red Cross Day celebration organized by CCHS on 8th May 2025 was not just an awareness campaign but a reminder of the power of small actions—how taking care of oneself can also be a step toward caring for others. It reaffirmed the importance of health, service, and humanity within the campus community.

In conclusion, the World Red Cross Day celebration by CCHS on 8th May 2025 served as a powerful reminder of the importance of both personal well-being and collective responsibility. Through simple, accessible health messages and visually engaging displays, the initiative successfully promoted awareness and encouraged students to adopt healthier habits. More importantly, it reinforced the core values of empathy, care, and service that lie at the heart of humanitarian efforts. In nurturing these values within the student community, CCHS continues to build a campus culture rooted in compassion, resilience, and a commitment to the greater good.
