INTENSIVE WORKSHOP ON CASE TEACHING, WRITING AND RESEARCH AT CIM
An Intensive Workshop on Case Teaching, Writing and Research was conducted at Christ Institute of Management, Lavasa from 12th to 14 and from 17th to 19th January 2019. Professors from various disciplines of Christ University, Bengaluru attended it.
The learning objectives were clearly defined at the beginning through study material that was shared with all the participants. It delineated the demands of case-based pedagogy from the case instructor's perspective. It successfully outlined the transition journey from excellence in case teaching to excellence in case writing, research and publication. Above all it provided a platform for sharing experiences and insights in the same fields through brain storming sessions. It was extremely interactive in nature and provided a great learning experience.
The workshop was successfully conducted by Professor Mukund R Dixit; an independent management researcher and facilitator. He has been a member of the Board of Governors of Private and Public-Sector Undertakings in India. His teaching, research and consulting interests are in Taking Charge and Leading Strategy, Innovation Impact, Longevity of organisations, and Case Method of Learning. He designs and delivers workshops on Taking Charge and Leading Strategy for senior and top executives of large and medium organisations in India and abroad. Prof Dixit also conducts workshops on Case Teaching and Research for faculty members of management institutes. Professor Dixit has retired as a faculty member in the Business Policy Area of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) after three and a half decades of service.
A sustained involvement of the participants was clearly evident till the end. Multiple activities such as role play etc helped them to analyse the topic from a different perspective. It offered flexibility for a larger canvas. It was observed that analytical capabilities and interpretations were used to the maximum. The participants understood the relevance of taking cases from other disciplines. It was unanimously accepted that at the beginning analysis was based on assumption later interpretation based observation was incorporated. It was needed to have customized content which catered to interdisciplinary studies. Research based analysis was the need of the hour.
As a takeaway the participants learnt about the significance of selecting a case and find ways to read a case thoroughly before meeting the students. All the teachers agreed that one must not look for a concrete answer and alternate options should be kept in mind while analysing a case. It is pertinent to identify cases for subject one teaches and plan and prepare before a teacher goes to the class.
Professor Dixit's invincible style of conducting the workshop was highly appreciated by everyone. His deep knowledge, ability to involve participants from diverse background and his remarkable energy level was commendable.
At the end of the workshop everyone felt enlightened and enriched with knowledge and wisdom to handle a case. They intent to share the information with their students, when they will conduct similar case study sessions in their respective classes.
In all an it was a very fruitful session and everyone was highly impressed by the energy and passion with which Prof Dixit conducted the sessions and the attention was retained till the end.
