GITHUB WORKSHOP
The GitHub Workshop held on the 5th of December 2023 was a resounding success, providing essential insights to first-year BSc DS and BSc EA students on the powerful platform GitHub and its myriad benefits. The event, conducted from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm, aimed to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the world of collaborative coding and open-source contributions.
The workshop commenced with a thorough exploration of Git installation, emphasising the importance of version control in software development. Participants were guided through the process of setting up Git on their machines, using the official download link: Git Installation. This foundational step laid the groundwork for understanding version control and collaborative coding practices.
Subsequently, students were introduced to the heart of collaborative coding—GitHub. A walkthrough on creating a new GitHub account was provided, ensuring that every participant was equipped with the tools necessary to engage in collaborative projects. The process was outlined with clarity, utilising the official GitHub registration page: New GitHub Account.
To facilitate a hands-on experience, participants were encouraged to customise their GitHub profiles by creating a distinctive README file. This not only familiarise them with the process but also served as a practical exercise in showcasing their skills and projects.
The workshop further delved into the practical side of GitHub with an introduction to GitHub Desktop. This user-friendly interface simplifies the Git workflow, making it accessible to those less familiar with command-line operations. The desktop application can be downloaded from GitHub Desktop, and participants were guided through its installation and basic usage.
A notable highlight of the workshop was the exploration of Microsoft Learn modules, specifically the "Introduction to GitHub" module available at MS Learn Module. This comprehensive resource served as an additional learning aid, providing participants with a structured and interactive way to deepen their understanding of GitHub.
In conclusion, the GitHub Workshop successfully equipped the students with essential skills, fostering their ability to contribute to the open-source community. The participants gained proficiency in Git and GitHub fundamentals, enabling them to track code changes and construct digital portfolios to showcase their projects. The event not only broadened their technical capabilities but also encouraged a collaborative mindset essential for success in the dynamic field of software development.
