Visit to India Meteorological Department

On 30th July 2025, the students of second-year M.Sc. Data Science from CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus visited the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune. The visit was organized with the objective of exploring research project internship opportunities and understanding the operational and research activities of IMD, particularly in the context of climate science and data analytics.

The students received a warm welcome from senior officials and scientists of the department. The session commenced with an introductory address by Dr. Satyaban Bishoyi Ratna, Scientist ‘E’ and Head, Climate Application & User Interface Group. Dr. Ratna welcomed the students and faculty, outlined the agenda for the visit, and set the context for academic-industry collaboration.

This was followed by a motivational talk by Shri K. C. Sai Krishnan, Scientist 'G' and Head, Climate Research and Services. He encouraged students to actively engage in climate research and invited them to ideate potential projects that could contribute meaningfully to the field.

An insightful and detailed presentation was then delivered by Dr. Sudeep B. L., Scientist ‘C’ from the Climate Data Management Group. He provided a comprehensive overview of the work undertaken by the Climate Research and Services division. His session focused on the methodology of data acquisition, processing, analysis, and dissemination at IMD. He emphasized how weather and climate data are utilized in diverse domains such as agriculture, aviation, and disaster management, and highlighted the importance of data-driven decision-making in these sectors.

As part of the interactive segment, each student introduced themselves, outlining their academic background and specific areas of research interest, particularly in the domains of climate data analytics and agricultural applications. Several students shared preliminary research ideas and sought feedback from the IMD scientists, fostering a meaningful dialogue that connected theoretical knowledge with practical challenges.

A key highlight of the visit was the discussion on IMD’s contribution to agrometeorology. Students learned about the five-day weather forecasting system that includes parameters such as rainfall, wind speed, and temperature, which are crucial for agricultural planning. The use of mobile applications, newspapers, and other media to disseminate this information to farmers was also explained, showcasing the real-world impact of meteorological research.

Towards the end of the session, students were informed about career opportunities at IMD. It was shared that postgraduate and eligible undergraduate students may apply for positions such as Scientist B through the UPSC recruitment process—an encouraging insight for those aspiring to work in meteorological sciences.

The visit concluded with a group photograph in front of the IMD building. Some students also engaged in one-on-one discussions with the scientists, further exploring research ideas and professional guidance.

Overall, the visit proved to be highly informative and enriching. It offered the students a deeper understanding of the vital role played by IMD and highlighted the potential for meaningful collaboration in data-driven climate research and applications.
