Webinar on Nuances of Scientific Research


The department of Data Science, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus and Centre for Research, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore Central Campus jointly organized a webinar on 'Nuances of Scientific Research' on 18 May 2021 from 4.00 PM - 6.00 PM. The speaker for the talk was Dr Aninda Bose, Senior Publishing Editor - Books, Springer Nature, India. 

The webinar started with Ms Teres Augustine (Student, 1 MSc Data Science) welcoming the Chief Guest, Dr Fr Joseph Varghese, Dr Fr. Jossy P. George, Fr. Arun Anthony, the faculty and the participants. Dr Fr Joseph Varghese gave the welcome address to the audience. He talked about the decline in the availability of scholars for research review due to the pandemic, but Springer is doing a great job keeping research alive and appreciated their efforts. Prof. KT Thomas then briefly introduced the speaker for the event.

Dr Aninda Bose took over the session by briefly introducing the Springer publication to the participants and talked about the company's history. He began the webinar by discussing the importance of writing, publishing research papers, and some practices to be kept in mind while publishing. He moved on to explain the submission process for the research papers in detail. He talked about the publishing timeline and went through the various process involved. He explained in great detail about the review process and why it is essential to consider them while revising your paper.
He talked about the ethical issues in academics that must be kept in mind while writing and publishing and refrain from them. He spoke about various practices that are considered unethical, such as plagiarism, copyright, data fabrication, data falsification and self-plagiarism. While discussing copyrights, he talked about the Cope website, which has cases and data telling about what is ethical and unethical work.  He also gave insight into the fair use of the resources and recommended the Chicago manual for further reference. Dr Bose believes it takes a subject expert to recognize how much is plagiarized no matter how many tools are out there.
Next, he talked about the structuring of the manuscript, wherein he explored all the sections of a manuscript. He gave practical advice on some of the things that must be kept in mind while writing a paper. Moreover, he gave his insights about the journal impact factor and Clarivate analysis. He said that journals with low impact factors still would be considered good papers. It all depends on the number of citations a research paper has.
Finally, he discussed the types of publications Springer does and where can the research be published accordingly. Dr Bose believes that publication is the vital part of the research is its publication and believes in the right practice of the same. He concluded the webinar by encouraging all the participants to publish their research papers with Springer. He answered some of the questions raised by the participants pertaining to research.
