NATIONAL LEGAL SERVICE DAY LECTURE

The National Legal Service Day is celebrated in the country every year on 9th November. The day is observed to commemorate the Legal Services Authorities Act's enactment and create awareness about the various provisions related to the act.

To celebrate the day and creating awareness among the students, the Legal Aid Committee, School of Law CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa campus organised a lecture at 2:00 PM on 9th November 2021 and invited Dr G Laxman, Assistant Professor Law, Dayanand Law College, Latur, Maharashtra who is having 18 years of practical experience in conducting different legal aid camp across Latur district to deliver the lecture through online mode. Prof Sadanand Karhale Faculty member for Legal Aid Committee began the programme by telling the importance of the Legal Service Day, the anchoring for the session was done by Ms Theresa BBALLB 3rd year student and the guest was introduced by Ms Shruti Nag BALLB 2nd year student and vote of thanks was given by Dr Sanjay Bang, the Faculty Co-ordinator for Legal Aid Committee.

Dr Laxman, first talked about the Constitutional provisions about the Legal Aid and then the Statutory provisions about the Legal Services Act - 1987. Besides discussing the Legislative provisions, he talked about the Judicial interpretation of the matters related to the downtrodden and poor people who are deprived from their legal rights and how the law fraternity can contribute into this to make the efforts of legislature and the judiciary more practical. He showed the way to law students how they can effectively work and organise legal aid camps and identify the practical problems which the people particularly the rural ones are facing.

He also shown the students the problems associated with the needy people and the tool to overcome the same. The problems like, illiteracy, lack of awareness, insecurity about knowledge, and most importantly the money which the poor can’t afford to spend on litigation and allied matters. He told them the way to organise camps, participate in Lok Adalat, creating awareness by pomplates or by using social media, play, or attract them with certain incentives.

Thereafter he had shown the practical position and the limitation which are creating the Legal Service and Legal aid more theoretical rather than practical. Senior advocates are reluctant to give their time. The structure which every state is using is also not satisfactory. He talked specifically about Delhi where the percentage is highly unsatisfactory. He concluded his lecture by saying that “all the institutions, Govt agencies, educational institutions should join together and design a programme for welfare-oriented attitude in order to participate in legal aid services”. He stressed that the upcoming advocates if actively participate, things would be different and we could reach to the last person who is denied his right due to any of the above-mentioned matter. He in fact concluded that judiciary has to be stricter not only delivering the lecture but also to check its practical implementation as well.

The program was well organised by the Legal Aid Committee members and 280 students participated in the program.
