Canva Workshop
The Department of Languages hosted a two-hour workshop on the use of the Canva platform for first-year MA English with Digital Humanities students. The event was conducted on 3 rd August from 8:30 AM onwards. The resource person for this workshop was Ms Bharat Garima, a mentor from the Centre for Academic and Professional Support. This workshop aimed to introduce students to Canva, a versatile graphic design tool that can enhance their academic projects and presentations. Canva's intuitive interface and vast array of templates make it an invaluable resource for students in the digital humanities, where visual communication is increasingly important.
The workshop began with a brief introduction to Canva, covering its history, purpose, and relevance in the digital age. The facilitator highlighted Canva's role in simplifying graphic design tasks, making it accessible to users with varying levels of expertise. The discussion emphasized Canva's potential in academic settings, particularly for digital storytelling, project presentations, and content creation.
The first session focused on the basics of Canva, including account creation, navigating the dashboard, and exploring the diverse range of templates available. The facilitator guided the students through the process of selecting and customizing templates for different types of projects, such as posters, infographics, and presentations. Students learned how to use Canva's drag-and-drop functionality to add text, images, and elements to their designs.
In the second session, the facilitator showcased various practical applications of Canva in academic projects. Students were shown how to create engaging visual content for essays, research presentations, and digital portfolios. The session also covered tips on maintaining visual consistency and the importance of aligning design elements with the intended message. The facilitator encouraged students to think creatively and explore different design possibilities to enhance their projects.
A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to hands-on activities, allowing students to apply what they had learned. Working individually or in pairs, students created a sample project using Canva. This exercise enabled them to experiment with different design tools, such as color palettes, fonts, and graphic elements. The facilitator and assistants provided guidance and feedback throughout the activity, ensuring that students felt confident in their ability to use Canva effectively.
The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, where students could ask questions and share their experiences. Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the opportunity to learn a practical skill that complements their academic studies. Students highlighted the user-friendly nature of Canva and its potential to enhance their digital projects.
The Department of Languages extends its gratitude to Ms Garima and the workshop assistants for their dedication and expertise. The students demonstrated great enthusiasm over the course of the workshop for their enthusiastic participation, making this workshop a productive and enjoyable learning experience. Based on the positive reception of this workshop, the idea was floated about having similar sessions to be conducted regularly to continue building students' digital skills. Additionally, exploring advanced features of Canva, such as collaboration tools and integration with other digital platforms, could further benefit students in their academic pursuits.
