Birdathon
On the morning of Sunday, 13th October 2024, members of Avian Allies from Christ (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, participated in a bird walk around the Central Block. The event commenced at 7:00 AM, providing participants with an opportunity to appreciate the serene environment and observe various bird species inhabiting the campus. The walk began in the lush, green area surrounding the Learner’s Cafe, allowing students to experience the tranquil surroundings characterized by diverse trees and plants that serve as habitats for numerous birds. During the walk, students successfully identified 18 different bird species, which included two rare sightings. One of the highlights of the event was the sighting of two Grey-headed Lapwings, a species considered rare in this region. This moment garnered excitement among the participants and was a key point of interest during the walk. In addition to this rare sighting, the group observed several common birds, enhancing their experience of local avian life. Among the common birds spotted were the Spotted Dove and the White-throated Kingfisher, both noted for their vibrant coloration and frequent presence in the area. Another interesting sighting was the White-cheeked Barbet, a small green bird, and the Common Iora, recognized by its bright yellow and green plumage.
The Indian Paradise Flycatcher was also observed, admired for its long, flowing tail, which adds to its beauty in flight. The walk included sightings of various crow species, smaller birds such as the Ashy Prinia and the Common Tailorbird. The Ashy Prinia is distinguished by its grey and brown feathers, while the Common Tailorbird is known for its agile movements and distinctive calls. Additionally, a Wire-tailed Swallow was identified, recognized for its elongated, slender tail. The students were thrilled to spot two types of bulbuls during the walk: the Red-whiskered Bulbul and the Red-vented Bulbul, both of which are well-known for their cheerful songs and lively behavior. In summary, the bird walk proved to be an engaging and educational experience for the students. They not only enjoyed the variety of birds but also gained valuable insights into the local wildlife on their campus.
The atmosphere during the walk encouraged participants to engage with nature, fostering a sense of connection to their surroundings. This event highlighted the importance of avian conservation and promoted awareness among students regarding the biodiversity present in their environment. The combination of rare and common species observed allowed students to appreciate the ecological richness of the campus while also developing their observational skills. The successful identification of multiple species exemplified the vibrant avian life in the area, creating a lasting impression on the participants. Overall, this bird walk facilitated a greater appreciation for the biodiversity on campus and underscored the significance of preserving local wildlife. Through this experience, students were encouraged to continue exploring and learning about the natural world around them, ultimately fostering a deeper respect for conservation efforts in the future. This event exemplified the commitment of Avian Allies to promoting environmental awareness and engagement among the university community.
