Mumbai Port Visit
The primary objective of the industry visit was to enhance students’ practical understanding of international trade practices, port-led development, logistics operations, and global business environments. While 23 students fulfilled their experiential learning component through a Sri Lankan port visit as part of the Global Immersion Program, the remaining third-year BBA students undertook an in-depth exposure visit to Mumbai Port, one of India’s most strategically significant maritime gateways.
The visit commenced early in the morning at 4:15 AM from Pune Lavasa Campus, with the group reaching Mumbai Port by 10:00 AM. After completing verification procedures, security checks, and fee remittance, the academic engagement began at 11:00 AM. Designated port officers guided students through various operational zones, including docks and terminal areas, providing detailed explanations of port activities and workflows. The guided sessions concluded around 2:00 PM, after which students were taken to the Gateway of India for refreshments and recreational time. The group regrouped at 4:00 PM and returned safely to the Lavasa campus by 10:00 PM.A major highlight of the program was students’ exposure to the operational, technological, and strategic dimensions of Mumbai Port. Through direct interaction with port officials, students gained insights into the port’s multi-terminal structure, transshipment capabilities, and its pivotal role in connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. They observed advanced infrastructure and technologies such as Ship-to-Shore cranes, Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) and Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) systems, automated yard vehicles, and digital cargo management platforms.
Discussions with port authorities also focused on recent investments, foreign participation, infrastructure modernisation, and cross-border economic cooperation, highlighting the economic rationale behind port expansion and capacity enhancement. Students developed a clearer understanding of international shipping procedures, port safety protocols, supply chain integration, and global trade flows, thereby bridging theoretical concepts with real-world applications.Overall, the Mumbai Port Industry Visit served as a highly impactful experiential learning initiative, reinforcing classroom learning through direct industry exposure. The activity significantly enhanced students’ analytical perspectives on international business operations, logistics management, and global trade dynamics, fulfilling the intended learning outcomes of the International Business course and strengthening industry–academia linkage.
