Fundamental Rights, Duties and Financial Justice under the Indian Constitution

The School of Commerce, Finance and Accountancy, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, organized an insightful session on “Fundamental Rights, Duties and Financial Justice under the Indian Constitution” on 29 May 2026 at 10:30 AM in Room No. 2226, Management Block. The session was conducted by Dr. Akansha Srivastava, Assistant Professor, School of Law, and was attended by students and faculty members of the Department of Commerce.

The objective of the session was to enhance students’ understanding of constitutional values and their relevance in contemporary society, with a special focus on financial justice and responsible citizenship. The session aimed to bridge the gap between legal principles and economic realities, helping commerce and finance students appreciate the constitutional framework that governs rights, responsibilities, and equitable economic development in India.

Dr. Srivastava began the session by providing an overview of the Indian Constitution, emphasizing its significance as the supreme law of the land. She explained the concept of Fundamental Rights and highlighted their role in safeguarding individual freedoms, ensuring equality, and protecting citizens from arbitrary actions. Particular attention was given to the Right to Equality, Right to Freedom, and Constitutional Remedies, illustrating how these rights contribute to creating a just and democratic society.

The discussion then shifted to Fundamental Duties, where students were encouraged to recognize their responsibilities as citizens. Dr. Srivastava explained how duties complement rights and contribute to national development, social harmony, and democratic participation. Through practical examples, she demonstrated how responsible citizenship extends beyond legal compliance and includes ethical conduct, respect for constitutional values, and active engagement in nation-building.

A significant portion of the session focused on the concept of Financial Justice under the Indian Constitution. The resource person explained how constitutional principles support equitable distribution of resources, economic opportunities, and social welfare. Various constitutional provisions and Directive Principles of State Policy were discussed to illustrate the government's role in reducing inequalities and promoting inclusive growth. Students gained insights into issues such as financial inclusion, access to education, employment opportunities, and social security measures that contribute to economic justice.

The session was highly interactive, with students actively participating in discussions and raising questions related to taxation, public welfare policies, economic rights, and the role of citizens in ensuring accountability. The speaker effectively connected constitutional concepts with real-life financial and economic challenges, making the session particularly relevant for students pursuing studies in commerce, finance, and accountancy.

The event also highlighted its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. By promoting constitutional literacy and awareness of financial justice, the session contributed to the development of informed, responsible, and socially conscious future professionals.

Overall, the session proved to be an enriching learning experience. It deepened students’ understanding of constitutional obligations while encouraging them to reflect on their role in promoting justice, equality, and economic fairness. The participants appreciated the practical insights shared by Dr. Akansha Srivastava, and the session successfully reinforced the importance of constitutional values in both personal and professional life.
