Mastering Legal Research with LexisNexis: A Training Session


The Library & Information Center, in association with the School of Law, successfully organized a training session titled “Mastering Legal Research with LexisNexis: A Training Session” on 18 April 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Auditorium, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus. The session was conducted by Ms. Sarita Patnaik, representative of LexisNexis, New Delhi. The programme was organized for students and faculty members of the School of Law with the objective of enhancing their legal research skills through effective use of the LexisNexis database.

The event commenced with a warm welcome and introduction to the significance of digital legal research tools in contemporary legal education and practice. The resource person highlighted the growing importance of reliable legal databases in academic research, legal drafting, case analysis, and professional legal work. She emphasized that legal researchers must possess strong database-searching skills to access authentic and up-to-date legal information efficiently.

During the session, Ms. Patnaik provided a comprehensive demonstration of the LexisNexis platform and its key features. Participants were introduced to various resources available through the database, including case laws, statutes, legal journals, commentaries, legal news, and updates. Special attention was given to advanced search techniques, Boolean operators, filters, citation tools, and methods for refining search results to retrieve accurate and relevant information.

The hands-on demonstration enabled participants to understand how to conduct effective legal research using practical examples and real-life search scenarios. The resource person also explained strategies for locating landmark judgments, tracking legislative developments, and utilizing citation tools to improve academic writing and legal documentation. Faculty members and students actively participated throughout the session by asking questions and engaging in discussions related to legal research challenges and best practices.

The training session successfully achieved its objectives of strengthening legal research competencies and familiarizing participants with advanced research tools available through LexisNexis. The programme enhanced participants’ understanding of efficient information retrieval techniques and demonstrated how digital legal resources can significantly improve the quality of academic assignments, research projects, legal drafting, and case analysis.

The session also contributed to increasing awareness about the extensive resources available through the university’s subscription to LexisNexis. Participants expressed appreciation for the practical orientation and indicated that the training would help them utilize the database more effectively for academic and professional purposes. The interactive nature of the programme encouraged active learning and boosted confidence in conducting independent legal research.

The event was coordinated by Mr. Santosh, Ms. Nalini, and Ms. Reshma Kurup, whose efforts ensured the smooth conduct of the programme. Support from the Campus Development and Logistics (CDL) team for publicity and event coverage, as well as technical support from the IT team, contributed significantly to the success of the session.

In conclusion, “Mastering Legal Research with LexisNexis: A Training Session” proved to be a highly informative and beneficial programme. By providing expert guidance and hands-on exposure to one of the world’s leading legal research databases, the event strengthened the legal research capabilities of students and faculty members and promoted the effective utilization of digital legal resources at the university.
