CLEAN UP DRIVE

On November 26 th , 2022, at 4:00 pm, about 60 enthusiast volunteers suited up with gloves, masks, broomsticks and a strong will to make a change gathered around to be part of this Clean-Up Drive. Hill station holds a lot of allure for tourists and citizens alike. The sparkling water at Bandstand, Lavasa is a great example of this, drawing many onlookers on the daily. But unfortunately, since the location is a people magnet, it tends to be overrun with improperly discarded waste. This waste makes its way into the sea and creates a nuisance, not only affecting the water quality and hygienic environment but also disrupting the lives of its aquatic animals. As a result, the otherwise sparkling river is well on its way to turning into a river of plastic.  Our students under the Centre for Social Action volunteered at the Clean Lavasa initiative to clean up a 3 km area from the college premises stretch along the banks of the Lavasa river. which is the main source of water for thousands of people in Lavasa. The group cleared up more than 70 kg of waste which was then sent off to be properly discarded and recycled. The river Is quite a scenic location, with its lush greenery. Doing our bit at preserving the sanctity and environmental cleanliness of this location is sure to be a feat that our people will remember with fondness. The students also made posters for the event which were displayed at the clean up site. Further, volunteers of CSA and Faculty members were also present at the site for clean up. This showed that the University is aware of the rising concern about plastic pollution in the city. The clean up drive activity was a great opportunity to reach out and spread the message of reducing and managing plastic waste .

The students as a group felt content that they could make a small yet impactful contribution towards nature and its inhabitants. We aim to take this initiative further and create awareness among our families and societies so that we all can contribute in keeping our area and water bodies clean and not pollute it by throwing plastic and debris into them. Mountains shower love over everyone. They provide every living being with all the necessities to sustain life. The joy of watching sunset and sunrise from a snow-capped mountain will give you more pleasure than winning a million-dollar lottery.

However, some people are littering these heavenly mountains and their water resources with non-biodegradable things like plastic water bottles (Single Use), plastic wrappers, and foils. Seeing a dump of garbage and plastic waste in places like Spiti Valley and Ladakh is just heartbreaking. Putting dustbins and collecting garbage won’t help us for a long time as these small and remote villages don’t have any proper set to handle this garbage. that’s the reason we have a committee CSA ( Central for social action and it is worked for the society.
