Guest Lecture on “Relation of History to the Study and Practice of Law.”

The straightforward function of law is to control society. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend society and create laws that are compatible with it. To do this, we need to be familiar with the past. Laws are made when many different things happen over time and these things are known as history. The foundation of all modern human institutions is history. It grows out of societal events and is sometimes regarded as the origin of all social science. It is the present of the past, with whatever is happening right now becoming yesterday's news for tomorrow. Laws vary as a result of contemporary life, trends, and viewpoints, and changes in laws affect contemporary life. History, law, and life all reflect one another. Law is a reflection of life, and history is a reflection of life. This law is inextricably linked to both history and daily life. Thus Legal history tells us about central questions of how we organize our society. It’s a guide that gives answers to questions of morality and duty. On 21st of October, 2022 a Guest Lecture on "Relation of History in Study and Practice of Law" and "Human Rights of Refugees" was organised by School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus. Dr. Gireesh Kumar J, Associate Professor and Head of the Department, Department of Law delivered the lecture.

The Head of the Department, Dr. Pratapsinh Salunke expertly summarised the topic and provided a short speech, letting the students know what the topic would consist. Dr. Gireesh Kumar J gave his lecture on the topic “Relation of History in Study and Practice of Law” where he iterated on the importance of history in the creation and the promulgation of law as a subject and as a relevant part of society. He took several questions from students as he continued to move with the topic, making sure every query was entertained. He further talked about how the law helps us to understand why and how the law functions in modern-day society and what is the basis of its foundation. The speaker stressed that without learning and comprehending the actual history of the era, it is difficult to comprehend the law and legal developments of any era. He added that similar to this, it is impossible to comprehend and keep up with social and political trends without being familiar with and comprehending the law of the time, which is history. By having an interactive session with these experts, students' passion towards being diligent lawyers of the future was given a boost.

The guest lecture highlighted the significance of history for a law student. For every law student, having a solid understanding of history is essential. No matter what type of law each one has a unique history that only serves to strengthen the law through time. The students were introduced to the fact that lessons from our past guide society toward a better tomorrow.
