DLSA GUEST LECTURE
Ms Madhugita Sukhatme began the programme by addressing the audience and reciting the preamble to the Indian Constitution for the pupils. She associated the dependence of legal language and legal ease with the functioning of the law. Further, she explained the preamble to the students in 3 languages namely Marathi, English and Hindi to illustrate how a “cosmopolitan” population can be educated. Her speech included a variety of topics, including fundamental rights and duties in relation to the Right to Education. She supported her explanations with the evidence of the theory of “Origin of Law”. Wherein, she compared literature and religious scriptures that influenced and persuaded the formation of the laws of the Union of India. She also cited DLSA's (District Legal Services Authorities, Pune) many services and schemes undertaken independently for giving free advocacy and litigation to women and disadvantaged members of the society. She concluded her speech explaining the provisions of the Right to Education for minor children being fundamental and absolute in nature.
Further in the context of constitutional provisions, a relationship was formed between various fundamental rights like the Right to Equality and Life with contemporary affairs like personal liberty and privacy. The speaker also put light upon various fundamental duties of Indian citizens and their significance. Especially correlating the importance of rights and duties going hand in hand.
Later the students were addressed by Ms Mangal Deepak Kashyap who discussed matters related to free legal aid under Article 39(A) of the Indian constitution and the role of the National Legal Service Authority (NLSA) as well as the State Legal Service Authority (SLSA) in establishing a nationwide network for providing people with legal aid. The students were also introduced to critical legislative acts that are required as basics to the conduct of the court of law on all hierarchical levels such as Cr.P.C, C.P.C, Indian Evidence Act, 1872 etc…
Ms Kashyap further enlightened our students on the importance of the judiciary and the level of difficulty that candidates face. Understanding the sincerity of the study of law, the speaker motivated the students to focus on legislative aspects of law and concentrate on communication skills to excel in the legal fraternity.
Our guest lecturers gave the students a learning opportunity, and as first and second years, they received an understanding of the subjects they will learn in the coming years. Conclusively, the students earned a more broad understanding of the The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, Functioning of the Lok Adalat system as well as the greater schemes introduced by the DLSA for the welfare of the general and marginalized population of India.
The students also gained insight into the prospering internship opportunities available at the office of the Secretary of the DLSA and a brief introduction to crack the Judicial Examinations being conducted by UPSC.
The Legal Aid and Awareness Committee plans on hosting more meaningful guest lectures in the future.
