Bhashadaan 2024

On 13th September 2024, the Department of Languages at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, in collaboration with the BHASHINI initiative, conducted the 'Bhashadaan' event. This initiative aimed to make the internet and digital services more accessible to all Indians in their native languages, significantly contributing to the cultural and linguistic diversity of the digital space.

The event saw active participation from students enrolled in the MA English with Digital Humanities program, alongside external participants who joined in from various locations. This inclusivity was a key factor in the event's success, as it allowed for a diverse range of languages and dialects to be represented and supported.

The primary activity of the day involved participants logging into the BHASHINI portal, a platform dedicated to the initiative. Here, they engaged in the crucial task of translating and validating texts into various regional languages. This process not only helped in making digital content accessible to non-English speakers but also played a vital role in preserving and promoting India's rich linguistic heritage.

Participants worked diligently throughout the day, translating a wide array of texts, from educational materials to everyday communication tools. This hands-on approach allowed them to contribute meaningfully to the project, ensuring that a broader audience could access information in their native languages.

Upon completing their tasks, participants were awarded an online badge recognizing their contributions. This badge not only served as a token of appreciation but also motivated participants to continue their efforts in supporting linguistic diversity. Many participants proudly shared their achievements on social media platforms using the hashtag #BhashaDaan, which helped in spreading awareness about the initiative and encouraged others to participate.

The event was structured to be inclusive and accessible, allowing anyone, regardless of their location, to join and contribute. This approach fostered a sense of community and cultural pride among the participants. The collective effort of individuals from different parts of the country and beyond demonstrated the power of collaboration in achieving a common goal.

Moreover, the event highlighted the importance of digital literacy and the need for localized content on the internet. By translating and validating texts, participants directly contributed to breaking down language barriers that often hinder access to information and digital services. This effort is particularly significant in a multilingual country like India, where the digital divide can be exacerbated by language differences.

In addition to the translation activities, the event also included informative sessions where experts discussed the impact of language accessibility on digital inclusion. These sessions provided valuable insights into how linguistic diversity can enhance user experience and drive digital engagement across different demographics.

The 'Bhashadaan' event was a resounding success, achieving its objectives of promoting linguistic diversity and making digital content accessible to a wider audience. It not only empowered participants by providing them with the tools and knowledge to contribute to this noble cause but also instilled a sense of pride in their cultural heritage.

In conclusion, the collaboration between CHRIST (Deemed to be University) and the BHASHINI initiative through the 'Bhashadaan' event marked a significant step towards a more inclusive digital future. The event showcased the collective power of community-driven efforts in preserving linguistic diversity and ensuring that all Indians have equal access to the internet and digital services. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the participants were truly commendable, setting a precedent for future initiatives aimed at bridging the digital and linguistic divide.
