Workshop on Cloud Technologies

A comprehensive workshop on “Cloud Technologies” was organized for MSc Data Science and MSc Economics and Analytics students at Christ University Lavasa. The workshop, led by Mr. Amith Ashokan, aimed to provide in-depth knowledge of emerging cloud technologies. Mr. Ashokan, a seasoned Career Coach and Global Projects Mentor, brought significant expertise to the event, ensuring students gained valuable insights into cloud computing.

Event Highlights:

Day 1:

The workshop began with the installation of Azure, a Microsoft cloud computing service used for building, testing, deploying, and managing applications. Students also installed FileZilla, an open-source FTP application for transferring files to and from remote servers. The hands-on session included uploading CVs to the cloud and creating hyperlinks for easy access. The theoretical part of the day focused on the basics of cloud computing, challenges of traditional computing (high costs, maintenance complexities, limited scalability), and server configuration processes. The different types of cloud (public, private, community, hybrid) were introduced, along with their benefits, limitations, and use cases.

Day 2:

Students created a new database using MySQL Workbench, a visual tool for database architects and developers, and deployed it on Azure. They also installed AWS (Amazon Web Services), a comprehensive cloud platform. The day’s discussions covered transformation challenges such as custom configurations, infrastructure management, resource allocation, and continuous monitoring. Risks associated with cloud computing, including security, cost management, compliance, service disruptions, and vendor lock-in. Knowledge about the first data centre, what is data centre, data engineering basics, and some core concepts of data are also discussed.

Day 3:

The day commenced with a brief overview of the assignment, setting the agenda for the day's activities. The various topics that are covered are Introduction to virtual box and partitioning, setting the stage for the day’s main topic on virtualization. A clear explanation was received on VirtualBox based on real-life examples and how it is used in software testing. The session also covered emulators, their uses and benefits. Students have created a VM on the cloud using MS Azure and understand the various features and functionalities of AWS EC2.

Day 4:

Day 04 of the workshop reinforced the theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired over the previous days. The hands-on activities, live demonstrations, and project presentations helped solidify our understanding of cloud computing, virtualization, and cloud storage solutions. The discussions on interview questions and real-life use cases were particularly beneficial in preparing us for future career opportunities in cloud technology. Overall, the workshop was a comprehensive and engaging learning experience, providing valuable insights into the world of cloud computing.

Day 5:

Day 05 of the workshop introduced the world of big data and distributed computing. The sessions on Hadoop, MapReduce, and Databricks provided a solid foundation in managing and processing large datasets. The hands-on activities and practical exercises helped reinforce the theoretical concepts, making the learning experience both engaging and informative. By the end of the day, we had a deeper understanding of distributed systems and their applications in cloud computing, equipping us with the skills necessary to handle big data challenges in the industry

Students gained practical experience with essential cloud tools like Azure and FileZilla. They learned to upload and manage files in the cloud, which is crucial for remote accessibility. The session provided a foundational understanding of cloud computing, including its significance, various types, and the advantages and limitations of each type. It also provided theoretical knowledge on cloud computing covering essential aspects like deployment, server configuration, types of cloud services and intricacies of cloud transformation challenges. Finaly the students also taken a test based on the topics covered and certificates are issued to the students who cleared the test.
