Data Science Students Attend A Lecture On Innovation
The students of BSc and MSc Data Science, members of Computer Science Department along with Director & Dean, Dr Fr Jossy P George and Academic Coordinator, Dr Fr Arun Antony attended an informative lecture on `Innovation’ by Dr Sudeendra Thirtha Koushik, Director of Founder Institute and Chief Innovator at PRASU, member of body of governance and editor leader at IEEE TEMS on 18th February 2020.
The guest lecture commenced with the phrase, ``What actually matters is awareness'’ followed by three main modules namely research, innovation and business. Dr Sudeendra mentioned that research includes asking pertinent questions, conducting literature survey followed by hypothesis testing, study and finally drawing a conclusion and giving a report. He further explained that innovation means developing something new which is useful and business refers to implementation of an innovation.
It was quite informative to know about a cyclic process about money making. Dr Sudeendra explained that money is converted into knowledge by research, which is further converted into money using innovation and then it is increased to a larger scale using business. The money earned is simultaneously used for research again. He made the concept of innovation very clear by stating that innovation focuses on why one is innovating instead of what is being innovated.
Dr Sudeendra also stated clearly the primary reason why a start-up fails in its venture despite enthusiasm and knowledge. He further elaborated the reason and mentioned that inability to see or visualize a problem is the sole reason behind the failure of a start-up despite being aware of a solution. At this juncture he reiterated that the key to success is to ask oneself why a solution is required and further find its relevance in relation to the problem. Dr Sudeendra also mentioned that technology cannot solve a problem in isolation, it has to be combined with innovation.
The session was highly interactive in nature and gave valuable inputs pertaining to regarding research, innovation and implementation of innovation to business to the students. The students and faculty members also came to know how innovation is important and the different factors that should be considered during innovating anything new. It was aptly concluded that money and knowledge are related to each other in a way that research changes money to knowledge and innovation changes knowledge into money. The students have expressed willingness to attend such interactive sessions in future. The entire lecture was coordinated by HOD, Dr Samiksha Shukla.
