Guest lecture on `Indian Agriculture- Status, Importance and Role in Indian Economy’


An enlightening and knowledgeable guest lecture by Professor Sangeeta Shroff from Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics was organized for the students of Management and Economics on 20th February 2020 from 2.30 to 4.15 PM. The topic was `Indian Agriculture- Status, Importance and Role in Indian Economy’.

The lecture was conducted in the Smart Room, Management Block and it began with an in-depth analysis of the Indian Agriculture Economy. Professor Sangeeta Shroff rightfully pointed out the evolvement of Indian Agriculture from post-independence period. She further spoke about how agriculture plays an important role in providing employment. It was quite enlightening to observe that she emphasised more on how institutional factors have played an important role in the agricultural development of India.


The students were well versed with the fact that Indian Agriculture is a crucial sector of the Indian economy and contributes to its development. She further pointed out that off late agrarian economy has been showing a downward trend in its performance.  Further, she mentioned various government initiatives taken in the recent past for achieving higher growth in agriculture. Furthermore, she emphasised and explaining the state wise gap in actual productivity and potential productivity and the immediate need for reducing the gap.  Professor Sangeeta Shroff highlighted the huge increase in the index of price paid as compared to index of price paid for agriculture. She also explained the policies required to mitigate agrarian crisis.


It was quite interesting to know how the base of Indian economy has been performing throughout. She clarified her talk with the support of essential graphs and charts. During the course of her talk, she used various economic indicators to explain the pertinent facts. The entire session was highly informative in nature. The guest talk was coordinated by Assistant Professor, Kedar Vishnu Shankarrao from Department of Economics, CHRIST, Lavasa.
