EXPERT’S TALK ON “INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS”


Rights for interested faculty and students of all departments on April 26, 2023 to commemorate World Intellectual Property Day. Designated by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000, the special day is celebrated annually to raise awareness of the importance of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and designs in our daily lives.

The event was held in the Smart Room, Central Block from 3.00pm – 4.00pm. The program began with a welcome address by Ms. Sakshi Modi, a BSc student from the Department of Data Science, who introduced the guest speaker and welcomed him for his talk. Following this, Prof. Sugam Shine took the stage and began his presentation.

The speaker, Prof. Sugam Shine, Assistant Professor, School of Law, Christ Deemed to be University, provided a comprehensive overview of various aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, including patent rights and copyrights. He is an accomplished legal professional with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Law and a Master's degree in Intellectual Property Rights. He has been a top-performing student throughout his academic journey, and his expertise in legal research is well-known in the industry. He emphasized the importance of filing patents and copyrights, and also shed light on the ways and means to file a patent. In addition, Prof. Shine offered insights into different types of patents, providing the audience with a deeper understanding of the subject. He went on to explain that patents are rights granted to creators for original works and explained the importance of protecting intellectual property. The students were informed about the “Boudhik Kaksh”, an association within the University under the School of Law, that would help individuals protect their IP and file patents for their properties. He proceeded to give various examples so that students may understand the importance of safeguarding one’s creative works and ideas, of the legal mechanisms in place to protect them, and the potential breaches and infringements that may occur.


Apart from being an informative session, it was also a very engaging one. With a confluence of a diversity of faculty from different departments, no questions in the room went unanswered and insights and facts filled the room. The IPR Cell recognized the importance of innovation and creativity to the development of the academic institution and had taken the initiative to organize this expert's talk. By encouraging the protection and promotion of intellectual property and fostering a culture of innovation and originality, academic institutions can create an environment that is conducive to the growth of ideas and the advancement of knowledge.

The speaker was beyond happy to consider every question and made the session a memorable one by making students of Data Science comfortable with topics of Indian Law. The event proved to be a valuable learning experience for all the attendees who were armed with a newfound understanding of intellectual property and the laws that govern it. The talk ended with a vote of thanks by the moderator for the event, Ms. Sakshi Modi, on behalf of the Department of Data Science, who expressed heartful gratitude to the honorable speaker, Mr. Sugam Shine.
