Next-Gen Web Development: Tools and Technologies

The Department of Statistics & Data Science and the Department of Computer Science at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, organized an alumni workshop titled **“Next-Gen Web Development: Tools and Technologies”** on 31 October 2026. Held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Smart Room, Central Block, the workshop introduced students to modern web development, practical tools and the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in building web applications.

The session was led by **Mr. Rajdeep Deb**, a BCA alumnus (2020–2023) of the Central Campus, currently working as a Junior Product Manager at Jio Cloud Product, Reliance Corporate Park, Navi Mumbai. Drawing on his academic and professional experience, he shared insights into current development practices and the skills needed to address real-world technology problems.

The workshop explored how websites work and introduced the three core web technologies: HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Students learned that HTML provides webpage structure, CSS determines appearance and layout, and JavaScript adds interactivity. The importance of responsive design was discussed, particularly the need for websites to remain readable and usable on mobile phones, tablets and desktops.

Participants then explored the relationship between frontend, backend and database components. Through practical examples, the resource person explained how a frontend collects information, a backend processes requests and applies application rules, and a database stores and retrieves information. The role of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in connecting software components was introduced, along with HTTP methods, status codes, authentication, authorisation, input validation and secure data handling.

Another focus was the developer’s toolkit. Students were introduced to Visual Studio Code for writing and organising code, browser Developer Tools for inspecting webpages and troubleshooting errors, and Git and GitHub for tracking changes and collaborating. The session also explored AI-assisted coding. Participants learned how clear prompts can help AI tools generate ideas, explain code and suggest solutions. The resource person emphasised that developers must review generated code, test it, check security implications and understand each change before using it.

The practical highlight was the demonstration of **“Campus Connect,”** a small campus-focused web application for student team registration and project submissions. The demonstration traced information from the browser interface through application logic to the database. Students observed how details could be validated, stored and reviewed, and why pending projects should not appear as approved. They also learned a systematic debugging process: reproduce the issue, read the error, trace the flow, change one thing at a time and test again.

The workshop encouraged participants to think like developers: identify a user’s problem, plan a simple solution, build it in manageable steps and test successful as well as unsuccessful scenarios. Accessibility, performance and career pathways in frontend, backend and full-stack development were also discussed. Students were encouraged to create complete projects and explain the problems they solve, rather than simply listing technologies in a portfolio.

The workshop connected classroom concepts with practical, industry-oriented application development. It highlighted continuous learning, problem-solving, collaboration and responsible AI use. The session concluded with questions and discussion, encouraging students to identify campus challenges that could be addressed through digital solutions. This alumni engagement initiative offered an opportunity to learn from a graduate’s professional experience and inspired students to build, test, share and improve their own web development projects confidently.
