Workshop on 'Financial Planning Using Mutual Funds’





A workshop was organized on Friday, 29th November 2019 from 2.30 PM onwards at CIML for MBA first year and PGDM Finance Major second year students on 'Financial Planning Using Mutual Funds. It was sponsored by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and conducted by Mr Esmail Colombowala.

Mr Esmail Colombowala holds a post graduate degree and a banking certificate from London. He has over four and a half decades of work experience in the financial IT and training space, besides mentoring management students on interview and presentation skills. He has been engaged with multinational companies and banks and is also an avid investor with domain expertise in the capital market and in-depth knowledge of multiple investment products.

The program was an investor awareness and education initiative by L&T Mutual Fund. Mr Esmail began his lecture by defining financial planning and spoke about its importance. He spoke at length about the process of meeting life’s goals through proper management of finances, choosing optimal investing options and above all how to plan, save, invest and achieve basic financial goals. Then he brought to their notice why financial planning is a necessity because of increasing taxes, inflation etc. In a very meticulous way he explained the components of financial planning which include investment planning, retirement planning, tax planning and insurance planning. The students listened to Mr Esmail carefully when he told them about different types of MF’s such as EQUITY MFs, DEBT MFs and Gold MFs and their role in financial planning. He also mentioned cash which caters to Contingency Funds. 



The workshop gave valuable inputs about various matters pertaining to finance such as how inflation destroys investments/savings. It gave details about how to diversify investments to reduce risks and it was indeed a very practical approach. He briefed the students about the selection of right investment products at every life cycle stage and how to invest so as to achieve various financial goals in life. As a certified resource person from SEBI Mr Esmail answered questions on how to save tax and yet maximize returns and gave them a lot of information on how to secure their financial future before retirement. The students asked some relevant questions and the resource person answered them aptly. The talk benefitted the students in terms of enhanced knowledge and awareness for making investment decisions. The workshop was coordinated by Dr Ambuj Gupta from Department of Finance, CIML.
