Derivatives Demystified by Dr Geetha M Rajaram

A session on `Demystifying Derivative Markets’ was conducted on 6th March 2020 in the Conference Hall, Management Block by Dr Geetha M Rajaram, Principal, Global Institute of Managements Sciences. It was attended by students of Finance and Economics, and faculty members of these disciplines and organized by Dr Guru.

Dr Geetha conducted an engaging session on derivatives. Her presentation justified the title and indeed it `Demystified Derivatives’. It can be rightly said that the word ‘derivative’ is viewed by a majority of people, who work in domains other than finance, as a complex subject that is beyond their understanding. But contrary to popular belief, Dr Geetha’s lecture cleared all doubts in a very lucid manner. She presented the concept in a very simple, easy-to-understand manner and managed to make it quite interesting. It was observed by the audience that concepts like underlying, forwards, futures, options and swaps lost their complexity and the addressees were able to understand their meaning and relevance with reference to the current scenario. The students also noticed a perceptible difference in their knowledge of these concepts and were able to understand the underlying purpose which went beyond mere definition.

Dr Geetha M Rajaram had a relaxed and friendly approach towards a complex topic and was able to help the students shed their initial inhibitions and interact with her on the subject. The interactive session was well received by the students and gave them food for thought, the more so because Dr Geetha was able to link it with career options in the field. She was able to motivate the students to introspect on the sole reason behind selection of finance as a subject. She further elaborated on why it was essential for them to explore the different dimensions of finance as it would help them to make the right choices about their career. In all it was a well informed and well timed session which was well received by the students and teachers alike.
