Holistic Education – A Cut Above The Rest

Holistic Education is imparted to students for an in-depth understanding of life. Education is not just confined to text books or corporate talks but every effort is made by the college to provide a comprehensive learning which caters to their spiritual, emotional and psychological wellbeing. The teachers had lots of brainstorming sessions so that each module can be effectively communicated for internalization of the students.  The topics for HED are Cross Cultural Recognition, Value Pluralism, Relationship Management, Intellectual Humility and Healthy Relationship.

Holistic Education intends to help a student find purpose in life through interaction with others in a community and identify humanitarian values such as compassion and peace. Thereby it leads to an all-round development of self-actualization which caters to a person’s physical, emotional and spiritual growth. Such an approach will eventually develop the skills of a student and build his or her inner strength. It also includes creating the right ambience for a student in the college and help them connect with their innermost self.

Focused on more than cognitive development, holistic learning incorporates mind, body, spirit, behaviour and social interaction. HED classes aim to develop better communication and societal skills among the students who hail from different cultural ethnicity. One cannot deny the crucial impact it will have on their inter-personal relationships.

The learning objectives of Cross Cultural Recognition will help a student to consider issues which arise when communities with different values and beliefs try to live together in peace. They will be able to consider the role of education in developing understanding between people of different cultures and consider whether individuals on their own can influence society. In the process the students will discuss issues raised by a story while being engaged in critical thinking as they share ideas through role play etc.

Value Pluralism will help them gain knowledge about different types of concepts about value pluralism because people of different ages, gender, religion, caste etc. coexist together. They will be able to identify and discuss issues pertinent to the topic in an academic environment and identify its attributes and strengths while describing the concept. The most important point will be to remember that different groups of people can retain their differences and distinctiveness, but remain part of the society. They will realize that language of respect and dignity should run through as a common thread across the differences. And acknowledging a multitude of traditions and ethnicity makes the world worth living in.

Relationship Management classes will focus on understanding the importance of healthy relationships and develop good character traits in a relationship. Keys to healthy relationships include Communication, Respect, Honesty, Dependability, Empathy, Inter-dependence and Purpose. The purpose is to understand the causes of conflict and core beliefs in relationships and improve skills to maintain healthy relationships.

Intellectual Humility classes will help students understand the difference between intellectual virtue and intellectual arrogance and develop a sense of self-worth. They will nurture humility to accept what one does not know while developing interest and curiosity to learn more. Above all they will be able to balance their intellectual ability and confidence thereof and the understanding that knowing is not just for debating or countering.

Healthy Relationships’ objectives will be primarily to provide insight into concept of healthy relationship with friends, family, professionals or neighbors. As an activity the students will be asked to write what they expect from their close friends and friends/colleagues in a paper and then build an argument on that. Through various role play activities and discussions, they will eventually understand that the challenges of a relationship include miscommunication, temperament, misunderstanding, poor persuasion skills, jealousy among many more. They will learn to list the types of personal relationships and classify them as personal, inter-personal and social. The objectives will be to provide insight into own relationship style, to identify the factors contribute to issues in relationship and to explore the core beliefs and associated behavior.

Thus, it can be concluded that HED classes will prove beneficial in the long run and the teaching-learning process will not be confined to text books and fixed curriculum.
