Nuances of Case Study Analysis

As zero-week is progressing the first year MBA students are getting a lot of information through various bridge courses. On Friday, 21st June 2019 the students learnt about the nuances of case study analysis. The students came prepared and were well versed with selected cases which had already been shared with them. Some of the cases were BlackBerry's Turnaround Strategy, International Logistics & Supply Chain Management, NEXA - A Successful Makeover, Cross-Badging Strategy, Dealing with Customer Complaints, "Ways to Keep Sizzling" - McDonald's Corporation, "Human Capital Acquisition and Organizational Innovation: A Temporal Perspective", Brand interactive in nature etc. The students took active part in the discussion and gave valuable inputs.

The pedagogy used was a mix of case studies, case discussions, exercises, role plays, dialogues and simulations to achieve its objectives. Based on the knowledge gathered, inputs provided and the strategies developed it will roll out a full-fledged pedagogy for making teaching - learning effective.

Analyzing a case study requires a lot of research work. Hence a professor’s role becomes crucial from being an excellent researcher to an effective research guide for the students. It provides a platform to an erudite professor to gain and share his or her valuable experience in research and publication while analyzing a case study. Such pedagogy helps them to debate the options and criteria in order to formulate an appropriate strategy.

In due course of time Case Study Analysis will be evaluated by the professors as part of CIA activity. Demonstration of an inadequate understanding of the topic(s) and issue(s) will not be acceptable. If a student presents a thorough analysis of most issues identified it would be considered as sufficient. The minimum criteria for evaluation would to support diagnosis and opinions with reasons. It should also include presentation of a fairly balanced view and the interpretation should be both reasonable and objective.

However, an exceptional case study presentation must include writings which demonstrate a sophisticated clarity, conciseness, and correctness; including thorough details and relevant data and information and above all it is extremely well-organized. Today’s session has paved way for an in-depth case study analysis and the students will definitely keep these points in mind in future.
