BREAK THE BIND

The Department of Data Science, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus in association with IEEE TEMS celebrated Women's Day on 12th March 2022. In line with the universal theme for Women’s Day 2022, “Break the Bias”, the event was named ‘Break the Bind’. Break the Bind was the department's initiative to move away from the societal stereotypes and make us realize that women are, in fact, capable leaders.

The virtual programme started with Ms Arundhati welcoming the gathering and inviting Dr Samiksha Shukla, the Head of the Department, to present the welcoming address. Dr Arun Tanksali, Chair-IEEE TEMS as the chief guest for the programme addressed the gathering and gave a thought-provoking speech on how genders are perceived within the society and what needs to be changed.

This day also marked the launch of the second issue of the First Volume of “The BluePrint”, the Newsletter of the Department of Data Science. For this issue, the newsletter focused on the theme of “Impact of varied Languages and Culture on the realms of Economics and Data Science”. Dr Tanksali launched the newsletter while the editor, Kritica Bisht introduced the theme of this issue.

The event progressed with a panel discussion with eminent speakers such as Dr Gayatri Chandrasekharan (Member of Board of Directors, SISA), Dr Seema Chopra (Global Technical Leader, Data Analytics at Boeing Research and Technology, India), and Ms Thara Srivathsa (Founder and Senior Consultant, Improvalue Consulting) as panellists. While moderating the panel discussion, Dr Jibrael Jos, Associate Professor, started the event with an interesting ice-breaking rapid fire. He asked each panellist a set of questions and they had to answer them as quickly as possible. These questions included what is life best lived and one thing college didn't teach. When asked what life is best-lived Ms Gayatri said ‘it is the life of contentment, a life without regret.’ Even Ms Thara said the one thing her college did not teach her was to talk about herself.

The discussion soon followed around, with each panellist getting three minutes to share lessons for their life and guidance for the audience. All of them shared how they ventured into their industries, breaking barriers and biases around the profession. They shared their experience with how women were and are perceived in the industries, struggles they faced as working mothers, and at last they inspired us all to work for our dreams without worrying about the world. They all have motivated us to dream and achieve all that we want without the fear of what the world says and wants. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks.
