UNMUTE

"The thing women have yet to learn is nobody gives you power. You just take it."  - Roseanne Barr

On Women's Day, the Department of Data Science celebrated the courage and grace of women and others around them with 'Unmute'. Unmute was an informal open mic celebration where everyone was invited to read and share a piece that was close to their heart. While some shared their original work, others shared work that gave them courage. The event was held on 8th March 2022 at 4:30 PM, Smart Room, Central Block. The event started with Trisha Prasad and Renzil Pinto, 4 BSc (Data Science), taking charge of the emcee.
Akshar read "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelo to start the programme. It was the first effort to break the biases around how a particular verse is for women and can only be read by them. Following this read, conversations flowed, and several works of literature were read out. Students came forward to read out poetry from anonymous writers. Students who wanted their pieces to be read out anonymously sent us those and were read out by the organizing committee members.

The department's faculty members participated in the event and came forward, too, with their poetry and stories that inspired them. These poetries were based on several themes, including a satire on society, love, and life struggles. Each poem was followed by a discussion, where the microphone was passed across tables for everyone to share their thoughts and views. As an informal gathering, conversations flowed, and stories were shared.

The students and faculty engaged in "Twist the story", a short game played with both students and faculty. The participants had to change their story and incorporate the word written on the board while continuing the story. Indeed, over Chai and Samosa, the whole department came closer with both students and professors sharing incidences of their lives and stories near and dear to their hearts. As the mic was passed across tables, conversations were ignited, thoughts were shared, and gratitude towards others was shown.
The evening ended with the organizing team asking members of each table to fill the white sheet on their table with their thoughts when they heard the word "Unmute."
