Hands-on Workshop on Natural Language Processing and Its Applications

On 2nd September 2022, NLP workshop was conducted on Natural Language Processing and its Applications by Mr. Pankaj Kumar Madhukar and Mrs. Priyanka, under the supervision of Dr Preethi N for the students of MSc Data Science 2nd year, from 9 am to 4 pm. The event was inaugurated by Fr. Justin addressing the gathering followed by a talk from the head of the department, Dr. Lija Jacob.

Four main aspects were covered under the workshop namely: Web scrapping. Text summarization, Spell check & Correction and NLP Bot. Detailed explanation of each and every topic along with the thorough hands-on training was provided during the workshop.

Students were introduced to several new libraries used in NLP such as ‘requests’, ‘Beautifulsoup’, ‘selenium’ etc.  In depth knowledge about Static and Dynamic data, Extractive text summarization and Abstractive text summarization was also provided. Also, hands- on for a new upcoming algorithm called ‘TRANSFORMER’ was provided by the speakers. Along with the hands- on training, videos related to all the topics were also shown for better understanding of the concepts. A segment on the career path and scope in the field of Natural Language Processing was also given which included various kinds of job descriptions and career opportunities.

The 7 hours workshop was successfully conducted by Dr. Preethi N and the presence of other faculty members. The workshop marked its end by the token of appreciation given to the speakers by
Fr. Justin and feedback taken from the students on a positive note.
